A home networking framework (14) is provided for interfacing an application residing on a digital TV receiver (16) with a home network environment. The home networking framework (14) includes: a digital TV middleware (22) that enables the application to access a digital transport stream received at the digital TV receiver (16); and a home network manager (40) that registers network devices (18A-N) and services support by the network devices (18 A-N) in a registry, thereby enabling discovery of the registered devices and services by the application. The home networking framework (14) further includes a service interface (42) which implements the functionality necessary to expose the application to the registered services and a networking translator (44) which provides the functionality necessary for communicating with particular types of network technologies. In an exemplary implementation, the service interface and network translator (44) are plug-ins modules that may be dynamically downloaded from the broadcast stream.

Interaction of the broadcast carousel, the iDTV platform, and the HN platform allows applications, content, and services to be delivered to a home network via a DTV broadcast stream.
