Abstract:
A rotatable cutting tool has a shank portion for coupling to a tool driving device and a cutting portion to which is attached at least one support member for retention of a replaceable cutting element. The support member is so arranged to permit displacement of at least the portion thereof retaining the cutting element whereby the position of the cutting element relative to the body of the cutting tool may be changed by such displacement. A totally enclosed hydraulic force multiplier is mounted within an internal cavity of the cutting tool. The force multiplier is responsive to a control force to effect the displacement of the support member, the control force advantageously supplied by application of pneumatic pressure.
Abstract:
An indexable turning insert has main upper and lower surfaces (10, 12) of polygonal shape joined by side surfaces (14-24). Insert corners (72-82) are defined by the intersection of insert sides at each corner of the polygonal surfaces, insert corners having a curve of relatively small radius (Rn) defining the nose of the corner. The inserts are at least partially symmetrical and have a plurality of identical cutting edges (30-46). Adjacent the corner nose of an identical cutting edge are wiping surfaces comprising at least one curved segment (100, 102) joining the insert corner radius and defined by a radius (Rw) larger than the corner radius (Rn) and at least one flat segment (104, 106) intersecting the insert side at a shallow angle (108).
Abstract:
A composition including a first phase selected from nitrides, carbides, carbonitrides, borides, sulphides, chalcogenides, oxides, and silicides, and a second phase selected from nitrides, carbides, carbonitrides, borides, sulphides, chalcogenides, oxides, and silicides, wherein said second phase comprises a multiplicity of discrete portions positioned into the first phase, with these multiplicity of portions comprising a continuous second phase, and made thereof, coatings and articles, especially, machining, cutting and shaping tools, wearparts, and methods of making and using the composition, coating and articles.

Abstract:
A rotatable cutting tool (10) has a shank portion for coupling to a tool driving device and a cutting portion in which are retained plural replaceable cutting inserts, each insert having at least one cutting edge. The shank portion includes a mounting face for removeably supporting an insert mounting disk having plural recesses at the periphery thereof for receiving the replaceable inserts. Each recess provides at least one seating surface for an insert, and includes opposing face portions between which an insert is releasably retained. The disk includes a central bore and radial grooves, at least one radial groove connecting the central bore and each insert receiving recess. The disk includes a concave central portion surrounding the central bore. A clamping means secures the disk to the shank and is used to elastically deform the concavity of the disk, whereby clamping forces are built and relaxed on all inserts placed in the disk concurrently by adjustment of the clamping means.
Abstract:
A rotatable cutting tool comprising a cutting tool body (12) having at least one (44) recess for receiving a replaceable insert (102). The recess (44) has a wall defined by a deformable clamp extending radially from the tool body (12), the clamp comprising a leaf (40) isolated from the tool body (12) except at the base of the leaf (12) by an isolating channel in the tool body (12). The tool further comprising adjustable clamping means for elastically deforming the leaf (40) to retain a replaceable insert (102) in the recess (44).
