    Abstract: An apparatus which includes a remote terminal unit (RTU) having a housing (402) is provided. At least a portion of the housing includes a shell (804) of thermally-conductive material. The RTU also includes at least one circuit board assembly (416-420) having at least one processing device (502) configured to communicated with one or more industrial control and automation field devices (106) via one or more input/output (I/O) channels (606a-606n). The at least one circuit board assembly (416-420) is positioned within the shell (804). The RTU further includes a heat sink (812) configured to remove thermal energy from the at least one processing device (502). In addition, the RTU includes a thermal pad (814) configured to receive the thermal energy from the heat sink (812) and to provide the thermal energy to the shell (804).
