Abstract: A fastener (10) includes a sleeve (14), a core bolt (12), and an insert (16). The sleeve (14) includes a first portion (72) having a first inner diameter (78), a second portion (74) having a second inner diameter (80), and a step (82) intermediate the first (72) and second (74) portions. The core bolt (12) includes a cylindrical portion (30) having an outer diameter (48), a threaded portion (44) having a major diameter (52), and a thread run-out (46) intermediate the cylindrical (30) and threaded (44) portions. The insert (16) is disposed within the sleeve (14) and is sized and shaped to abut and be retained between the step (82) of the sleeve (14) and the thread run-out (46) of the core bolt (12) when the fastener (10) is in a pre-installation position. The fastener (10) compresses the insert (16) between the step (82) of the sleeve (14) and the thread runout (46) of the core bolt (12) by an installation motion of the core bolt (12). The insert (16) is adapted to deform away from the core bolt (12) to initiate formation of a bulb (102) in response to the compression.

Abstract: A blind fastener (10) including a core bolt (12) having a shank (16) with a head (30) and a threaded portion (28), and a sleeve (14) having an elongated body (38) with a head (46), an internal threaded portion (50), and a tapered notch (56) formed within an exterior surface (44) thereof and defined by a tapered portion (57) having a slope and a frictional enhanced surface. The core bolt (12) is installed within the sleeve (14) such that its threaded portion (28) engages threadedly the internal threaded portion (50) of the sleeve (14). During installation of the fastener (10) within the plurality of workpieces (24a, 24b), a bulb (55) is formed on the elongated body (38) of the sleeve (14), the bulb (55) defining a portion of a bulbed portion (61 ). When a selected axial force is reached, the bulbed portion (61) separates from the elongated body (38) and engages axially the tapered portion (57) of the sleeve (14), increasing the diameter of the bulb (55) which engages a blind side (27) of one of the workpieces (24b).

Abstract: A rivet (10) includes a pin member (12) having a head (34) and a lock groove (26), and a lock ring (14) having a flange (53). The flange (53) of the lock ring (14) is swaged into the lock groove (26) of the pin member (12) and transformed to a bead (54) that engages the lock groove (26), and a portion (P) of an outer surface (50) of the lock ring (14) deforms and is rotated inwardly. The rivet (10) is installed within a structure (56) such that the head (34) of the pin member (12) is flush with an outer surface (68) of a panel (64) and the portion (P) of the outer surface (50) of the lock ring (14) is flush with an outer surface (66) of another panel (62). Abstract: A fastener installation tool (10) including an upper jaw (46) having a head (56) adapted to engage a fastener (100) for securing a plurality of workpieces (102, 104) to one another, a lower jaw (12), and first and second pairs of links (32a, 32b) fastened to the upper and lower jaws (46, 12). The tool (10) includes a hydraulic cylinder (84) having one end (86) attached to the lower jaw (12) and a piston rod (90) attached to the first pair of links (32a).
