Abstract:
A fastener (10) includes a sleeve (14), a core bolt (12), and an insert (16). The sleeve (14) includes a first portion (72) having a first inner diameter (78), a second portion (74) having a second inner diameter (80), and a step (82) intermediate the first (72) and second (74) portions. The core bolt (12) includes a cylindrical portion (30) having an outer diameter (48), a threaded portion (44) having a major diameter (52), and a thread run-out (46) intermediate the cylindrical (30) and threaded (44) portions. The insert (16) is disposed within the sleeve (14) and is sized and shaped to abut and be retained between the step (82) of the sleeve (14) and the thread run-out (46) of the core bolt (12) when the fastener (10) is in a pre-installation position. The fastener (10) compresses the insert (16) between the step (82) of the sleeve (14) and the thread runout (46) of the core bolt (12) by an installation motion of the core bolt (12). The insert (16) is adapted to deform away from the core bolt (12) to initiate formation of a bulb (102) in response to the compression.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A blind rivet (10) comprising an elongate hollow rivet body (11) having a head end (12) and a tail end (15) and an elongate mandrel (13) having a head end (14) located adjacent the tail end (15) of the body (11). The mandrel (13) has a stem (16) extending through the hollow body (11) and the stem (16) has a tapered portion (17) adjacent the head (14) of the mandrel (13) that tapers towards the head (14). The stem (16) has a distal end that projects beyond the head end (12) of the body (11). The tapered portion (17) of the stem (16) is provided with a plurality of axially spaced grooves (18 to 20) that define between them ribs (21 to 23) that have a profile comprising two axially spaced ridges (25, 26) subtending a concave circumferential surface (24) between the ridges (25, 26). The body (11) is of substantially uniform outer diameter and has a thicker wall thickness over the region (17) corresponding to the tapered section (17) of the mandrel (13).
Abstract:
A blind setting rivet assembly capable of permanently fastening sheet metal work pieces or the like together comprises a rivet body having a hollow tubular sleeve and an enlarged flattened head. The rivet body surrounds a mandrel that may have a weakened area to allow detachment of the mandrel shaft following application of sufficient axial force to the shank. This application of force sets the rivet by causing a tapered shoulder section of the mandrel to deform the rivet sleeve. The mandrel shank is terminated in a coring head that cores an aperture in the workpieces through which the rivet sleeve passes. The mandrel shank includes a weakened area of reduced diameter adjacent to the screw tip that allows detachment of shaft following application of sufficient axial force to the shank. This application of force causes the tapered shoulder section of the screw tip to compress and deform the rivet sleeve setting the rivet. The rivet assembly may be self polishing and self tapping and may also provide a hollow cylindrical threaded bolt head onto which a nut may be affixed to provide a means to removably attach other components.
Abstract:
There is provided a blind rivet (10) comprising an axially extending hollow tubular body (18) having a tail end face (22) at one end and a pre-formed radically enlarged flange (20) at the other end, together with a mandrel (30) having a stem (32) which extends co-axially though the body (18) and having enlarged head adjacent the tail end (22) of the body, the stem having a weakened region immediately adjacent the head, whereby the mandrel head having an outer diameter greater than an outer diameter of said body, usually by between 4% and 9%, and which has a uniform conical shoulder (38) extending between said outer diameter of the head and the stem (32), so as to exert a setting force having an axial component for compressing the rivet body axially and an angular component effecting conical deformation of the tail end radically. There is also provided a method of fastening at least two workpieces using such al blind rivet (10), including providing the blind side of the workpieces with a' countersunk region to accommodate the conically deformed tail end of the body after setting, substantially flush therewith.
