Abstract: An adaptive controller (42) is provided for controlling the velocity of a ram (32) in an injection molding apparatus (14) during the injection stage of the molding cycle. The controller (42) includes two sets of parameters. The first set of parameters defines an open-loop control equation and the second set of parameters defines a closed-loop control equation for controlling the ram (32) velocity. The first and second set of parameters are modified to improve the ram (32) performance and efficiency on the subsequent injection cycle.

Abstract: An adaptive controller (42) is provided for controlling the transition, in an injection molding apparatus (10), from the injection stage to the packing stage. The controller operates by controlling the velocity of the ram (32) during the injection stage, and controlling the ram pressure during the packing stage. The controller (42) anticipates the transition from the injection stage to the packing stage by monitoring the ratio of pressure to velocity. The divergence of this ratio forecasts the onset of the packing stage. At this time, a pressure relief valve (46) is preset in anticipation of the packing stage, to prevent a pressure spike during the transition period. The flow control valve (40) is held constant during the transition.

Abstract: A stem seal having first and second wiping members (30, 32) circumjacent a stem is disposed within a bore. A lubricant-bearing ring (40) is disposed about the stem within the bore between the wiping members, under compression therefrom. Projections from the wiping members intrude into the lubrication ring so as to depress the central surface areas thereof. Similar projections are used to center a coil spring (28) against one of these seal members and against an additional seal member (26). By forming the lubricant ring of open-cell foam or mesh construction, superior lubricant bearing capacities may be achieved.

Abstract: The gear shaping machine is of simplified construction and is dedicated essentially to forming only a single type of gear or a narrow range of gears. To enable the machine to be of simplified construction, the drive train between the cutter and work spindles (13, 16) consists of only four gears in a machine for cutting internal gears and consists of only four gears (65, 67, 80, 84) and a direction-changing idler (81, 82) in a machine for cutting external gears. Relative infeeding of the cutter (12) and the work blank (11) is effected by pivoting one of the spindles relative to the other spindle with one of the drive gears walking around another one of the drive gears during such pivoting. The differential rotation of the spindles produced by the pivoting action is negated in order to keep the spindles in proper rotational relationship.

Abstract: The hobbing machine (20) is of simplified construction and is dedicated essentially to forming only a single type of gear or a narrow range of gears. To enable the machine to be of simplified construction, its drive train consists of only four gears (66, 67, 70, 71) and its hob head (50) is mounted to pivot around the axis (65) of the drive shaft (63) for the work spindle (24). The arrangement of the four gears (66, 67, 70, 71) together with the pivotal mounting of the hob head (50) enables the hob spindle (23) to be inclined at a predetermined setting angle relative to the work spindle (24) and enables the center distance between the spindles to be selectively changed.
