Abstract: A centrifugally-responsive compression release apparatus relieves compression in more than one cylinder of an internal combustion engine during starting. The compression release apparatus utilizes a centrifugally-responsive, flyweight (28), a single shaft (20) operable by the flyweight (28), and one or more lift members movable by the shaft (20) and engageable with one or more valve operating devices. The compression release appparatus may employ a single lift member that is engageable with two valve operating devices upon rotation of the shaft, or alternatively, a pair of lift members each engageable with a distinct valve operating device. Thus, the compression release apparatus is particularly adaptable to reducing compression in two cylinders of a V-twin engine, but may be adapted to reducing compression in an engine having more than two cylinders.

Abstract: A pour spout (40) for conducting fluid from a container (42) to a receptacle. The pour spout (40) includes a conduit member (44) having a first end interconnectable with the container (42) and a second end having a discharge opening (50) and a vent opening (52), and a closure member (48) positioned adjacent to the discharge opening (50). Abstract: An engine starting device includes a roller selectively engageable between the crankshaft of an engine and an arbor. The roller causes the arbor to rotate in a loading direction in response to rotation of the crankshaft. Rotation of the arbor loads an elastic member. A locking mechanism, such as a ratchet wheel and pawl may be used to keep the elastic member loaded until it is desired to startup the engine. Engine startup is initiated by disengaging the pawl from the ratchet wheel and permitting the elastic member to unload. A pinion gear is mounted on a helically threaded portion of the arbor and moves axially along the helically threaded portion in response to unloading of the elastic member. The pinion gear engages teeth on the flywheel and causes the flywheel to rotate in a starting direction under the influence of the unloading elastic member.

Abstract: An engine starting and stopping device includes a fist roller (16) selectively abutting the flywheel (46) of an engine for rotation on a first shaft (118) in response to rotation of the flywheel. A second roller (130) abuts the first roller and rotates in response to rotation to he first roller. A second shaft (122) and an overwind clutch (154) couple the second roller with a third roller such that the third roller rotates in response to rotation of the second roller. Abstract: A retainer retains a release member for engine valves of an internal combustion engine. The release member causes an engine valve to be actuated depending on various operating conditions of the engine, such as engine speed or oil level. The retainer retains the release member to at least one of a cam lobe and a cam gear. The release member may be substantially L-shaped and centrifugally responsive. Alternatively, the release member may be a substantially U-shaped yoke that at least partially surrounds a cam shaft. The retainer includes a pin that is substantially transverse and non-intersecting to the cam shaft. The pin may be substantially straight and interconnect to bosses that project from the cam gear. Abstract: An internal combustion engine includes a spring housing rotatably mounted to the engine's engine housing for rotation about an axis of rotation. An energy storing mechanism including at least one elastic member is housed within the spring housing. A spring loading mechanism includes at least one roller movable into and out of engagement between the engine's flywheel and the spring housing, such that rotation of the flywheel is converted through the at least one roller to cause rotation of the spring housing in a direction that loads the elastic member. Abstract: An engine starting device includes a first pulley mounted to the crankshaft of an engine for rotation with the crankshaft. A second pulley is mounted to an arbor that extends into a spring housing containing an elastic member. The elastic member is interconnected with the arbor such that rotation of the arbor in a loading direction loads the elastic member. A belt interconnects the two pulleys and a tensioner is mounted near the belt to selectively apply tension to the belt. When the tensioner applies sufficient tension to the belt, the second pulley rotates in response to the first pulley and crankshaft rotating. Rotation of the second pulley causes the elastic member to become loaded in response to rotation of the arbor in the loading direction. A ratchet wheel and pawl may be used to keep the arbor from rotating in the unloading direction. To initiate start up of the engine, the pawl is removed from engagement with the ratchet wheel. A starter pinion rotates on a helical gear as the elastic member is unloaded. The starter pinion engages the flywheel and causes the flywheel to rotate in the starting direction.
