A synergistic microbicidal composition having two components. The first component is a nonionic surfactant with structure: R 2 0(CH 2 CH(CH 3 )0) 3 (CH 2 CH 2 0) 5 H, where R 2 is a mixture of C 8 -C 14 linear alkyl groups. The second component is 2-bromo-2- nitropropane-l,3-diol (bronopol), tetrahydro-3,5-dimethyl-2H-l,3,5-thiadiazine-2-thione (dazomet) or a mixture of 4-(2-nitrobutyl) morpholine and 4,4'-(2-ethyl-2-nitrotrimethylene)dimorpholine.

Alternatively, the first component is a nonionic surfactant with structure: R 2 O(CH 2 CH(CH 3 )O) 3 (CH 2 CH 2 O) 7 H, where R 2 is a mixture of C 8 -C 14 linear alkyl groups. The second component is 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one. In this case, the weight ratio of the nonionic surfactant to 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one is from 1:0.006 to 1:0.9143.

An aqueous microbicidal composition having two components. The first component is 0.5-5 wt% of a mixture of 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-methyl-4- isothiazolin-3-one. The second component is 1-10 wt% of a nonionic surfactant comprising a C 6 -C 12 alkyl group, an average of 3-7 moles polymerized units of propylene oxide and an average of 5-12 moles polymerized units of ethylene oxide.
