    Abstract: An electrophoretic display (100) comprises an electrophoretic medium (114) having electrically charged particles disposed in a fluid and capable of moving through the fluid on application of an electric field. An electrode (104, 120) is disposed adjacent the electrophoretic medium and arranged to apply an electric field thereto. A dielectric layer (106, 118) is disposed between the electrophoretic medium (114) and the electrode (104, 120) and has at least one aperture (107, 119) extending therethrough. The provision of the apertures (107, 119) in the dielectric layers enables the dielectric layers (106, 118) to protect the electrodes (104, 120) while reducing electro-optical kickback. When multiple electrodes (104, 120) are present adjacent the electrophoretic medium (114), more than one or all of the electrodes (104, 120) may be provided with apertured dielectric layers (106, 118).

    Abstract: Improved formulations of electrophoretic media that can be incorporated into displays, front plane laminates, inverted front plane laminates, or color changing films. The formulations include a non-polar fluid, a plurality of first charged particles, and charge control agents (CCA) including a quaternary amine and an unsaturated polymeric tail comprising monomers of at least 10 carbon atoms in length. The formulations show improved switching speeds, as well as a larger dynamic range at low temperatures (i.e., below about 0 °C), where compared to state-of-the-art electrophoretic media.

    Abstract: An apparatus for a three-dimensional display is disclosed that includes a waveguide having a pair of opposed faces configured to propagate radiation along its length, a radiation source optically coupled to the waveguide, at least one prismatic element having a face optically coupled to a face of the waveguide, and a layer of image modulating material optically coupled to a face of the waveguide. The image modulating material may be optically coupled to an area of a face of the waveguide, at least a portion of the area being located outside a perimeter of a face of the prismatic element.

    Abstract: An electrophoretic medium comprises a fluid, a first, light scattering particle (1) (typically white) and second (2), third (3) and fourth (4) particles having three subtractive primary colors (typically magenta, cyan and yellow); at least two of these colored particles (2-4) being non-light scattering. The first (1) and second (2) particles bear polymer coatings such that the electric field required to separate an aggregate formed by the third (3) and the fourth (4) particles is greater than that required to separate an aggregate formed from any other two types of particles. Methods for driving the medium to produce white, black, magenta, cyan, yellow, red, green and blue colors are also described.
