Abstract: A plasma reactor comprises a reaction chamber and an inlet head connected to the reaction chamber. The inlet head comprises an open end connected to the reaction chamber, a plasma inlet located opposite to the open end, an inner surface tapering from the open end towards the plasma inlet, and first and second gas inlets each located between the plasma inlet and the open end. A plasma torch injects a plasma stream into the reaction chamber through the plasma inlet, which is shaped to cause the plasma stream to spread outwardly towards the first and second gas inlets. This shaping of the inlet head and the plasma inlet can enable the plasma stream to impinge upon gas streams as they exit from the gas inlets and thereby cause a significant proportion of at least one component of the gas streams to be reacted before the gas streams begin to mix within the chamber.

Abstract: A method is described for treating a gas stream containing a flammable gas, such as hydrogen or a hydrocarbon gas. The gas stream is conveyed to a liquid ring pump (18), to which a gaseous oxidant and water are supplied. The water a'nd the gas stream are discharged from the pump (18), with the discharged gas stream being subsequently separated from the liquid, and conveyed to a pyrolysis device (42) for pyrolysing the flammable gas and the oxidant. Any particulates and acidic species within the gas stream are retained by the water within the liquid ring pump to inhibit corrosion or blockage of the pyrolysis device (42). A filter or other device (40) may be provided to remove water from the gas stream before it enters the pyrolysis device (42).

Abstract: A method of treating a gas stream containing silane or other silicon-containing gas is described, in which the gas stream is conveyed to a liquid ring pump or screw-mechanism pump, to which are also supplied an oxidant for oxidising the silicon-containing gas within the pump, and a liquid for forming a liquid ring or intermittent flushing within the pump. A liquid stream containing said liquid and a by-product of the oxidation of the silicon-containing gas is exhaust from the pump.
