Abstract: A method of ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) may comprise: contacting a first cyclic olefin comonomer to the reaction mixture over time at a rate of 0.01 mol% per minute to 25 mol% per minute based on a total amount of the second cyclic olefin comonomer added to the reaction mixture to produce a polymer, wherein a final mol to mol ratio of first cyclic olefin comonomer to second cyclic olefin comonomer added to the reaction mixture is 1:1 to 500:1; and wherein the second cyclic olefin comonomer has a higher reactivity with the metathesis catalyst than the first cyclic olefin comonomer.

Abstract: A supported catalyst system is based on a transition metal carbene including the moiety Ml=CR*) 2 , wherein M 1 is the transition metal and R* is hydrogen or a C1-C8 hydrocarbyl. The catalyst system can be supported on a metal oxide support such as silica or the catalyst can be self-supporting. Methods of making the catalyst system can involve precursors based on and/or reacted with aluminum alkyls, halides, and/or alkoxides. Methods of polymerizing cyclic olefins with the catalyst system can obtain polyalkenamers, cyclic olefin polymers, cyclic olefin copolymers, and other metathesis reaction products. The supported catalyst and/or monomer can be recovered and recycled to the polymerization reactor.

Abstract: An improved catalyst for cyclic olefin polymerization. The catalyst includes a transition metal carbene having the following structure: Mv(OR')c*mX(v-c*m-2)=C(R*)2 wherein Mv is a Group 5 transition metal having a valence (v) of 5 or a Group 6 transition metal having a valence (v) of 5 or 6; each R' is independently a monovalent organic moiety comprising from 8 to 40 atoms selected from Groups 14-17; c is an integer from 1 to 3; m is 1/3, 1/2, 1, 3/2, 2, 3, or 4 and c*m ≤ v-2; X is a halogen; and each R* is independently H or a C1 to C7 alkyl. The catalyst is particularly useful for ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP).

Abstract: Wax compositions may be obtained by subjecting one or more linear alpha olefins to olefin metathesis and hydrogenating. Methods for producing wax compositions may comprise providing a hydrocarbon substance comprising at least one linear olefin dimer formed from a first linear alpha olefin having m carbon atoms and a second linear alpha olefin having n carbon atoms in the presence of a metal carbene catalyst, the first and second linear alpha olefins being the same or different, and the linear olefin dimer comprising two carbon atoms less than a sum of m and n; contacting the hydrocarbon substance with a hydrogenation catalyst under hydrogenation reaction conditions; and hydrogenating at least a portion of the at least one linear olefin dimer to form an at least partially paraffinic hydrocarbon substance comprising at least one linear paraffin. Variable m and n independently ranging from about 12 to about 100.

Abstract: Wax compositions may be obtained by providing an olefinic feed comprising a first linear alpha olefin having m carbon atoms and a second linear alpha olefin having n carbon atoms, wherein m and n are independently selected integers each ranging from about 12 to about 100, and the olefinic feed optionally comprises one or more internal olefins and/or one or more branched olefins; contacting the olefinic feed with a metal carbene catalyst in a reactor; forming ethylene and a hydrocarbon substance comprising a linear olefin dimer comprising two carbon atoms less than a sum of m and n; removing the ethylene from the reactor while forming the linear olefin dimer; and isolating a wax composition comprising the linear olefin dimer, a hydrogenated reaction product thereof, or any combination thereof.

Abstract: Rubber compounds may comprise: an epoxidized polypentenamer rubber (CPR) and/or a hydrolyzed epoxidized CPR; and a filler comprising silica particles. One nonlimiting example is rubber compound comprising: phr to 90 phr of a styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), a natural rubber (NR), and/or a butadiene rubber (BR); 10 phr to 50 phr of a epoxidized CPR and/or a hydrolyzed epoxidized CPR; and 10 phr to 200 phr of a filler comprising silica particles, wherein the SBR, the NR, the BR, the epoxidized CPR, and the hydrolyzed epoxidized CPR combined equal 100 parts. Rubber compounds comprising epoxidized CPR and/or a hydrolyzed epoxidized CPR; and a filler comprising silica particles may be useful in tire compositions.
