    Abstract: A volumetric display may include a two-dimensional display; a varifocal optical system configured to receive image light from the two-dimensional display and focus the image light; and at least one processor configured to: control the two-dimensional display to cause a plurality of sub-frames associated with an image frame to be displayed by the display, wherein each sub-frame of the plurality of sub-frames includes a corresponding portion of image data associated with the image frame; and control the varifocal optical system to a corresponding focal state for each respective sub-frame.

    Abstract: A first type of stacked LC structure (1000) includes at least two liquid crystal (LC) cells (1005a, 1005b) arranged in optical series that share a common substrate (1012) between adjacent LC cells. A second type of stacked LC structure (900) includes at least two LC cells (905a, 905b) arranged in optical series that share a common electrode layer (918) between adjacent LC cells. An optical assembly for use in a head mounted display (HMD) may include one or more stacked LC structures configured to transmit light in successive optical stages to provide a varifocal optical display assembly having adjustable optical power. By sharing a common substrate or a common electrode layer between adjacent LC cells, the total thickness of a stacked LC structure may be reduced, which may lead to a corresponding reduction in size and weight and improvement in user comfort for an HMD.

    Abstract: A device includes a stack of a lens assembly and a steering assembly. The stack is configured to receive a beam from a first side and output the beam from a second side. The lens assembly is configured to provide an adjustable optical power to the beam. The steering assembly is configured to provide an adjustable steering angle to the beam. The device also includes a reflector configured to receive the beam output from the second side of the stack, and reflect the beam back to the second side of the stack. The beam reflected back from the reflector is incident onto the second side of the stack, and output from the first side of the stack.

    Abstract: A freeform varifocal optical assembly includes at least three optical modules including a first plurality of optical elements including Pancharatnam-Berry phase (PBP) lenses, polarization sensitive hologram (PSH) lenses, metamaterials, or combinations thereof. The plurality of optical elements of each optical module include a property associated with a Zernike polynomial. Each of the first and the three optical modules are configurable between a plurality of optical powers.     Abstract: A display system includes a source of unpolarized image light, and a stack of polarization-selective optical elements operable to switchably convert the unpolarized image light into two orthogonally polarized light beams, each of which being switchable in at least one beam characteristic. An output polarizer selects one of the two orthogonally polarized light beams for providing to a user. A depolarizer may be disposed between an electronic display emitting polarized light and the stack. The depolarizer may be in the form of an LC bilayer with randomized in-plane optic axis.

    Abstract: A holographic recording system includes a linear translation stage configured to position a holographic material layer, a light source configured to emit a laser beam, a beam splitting subsystem configured to split the laser beam into a first light beam and a second light beam and direct the second light beam towards the holographic material layer, a spatial-light modulator configured to implement a fringe pattern that modulates the first light beam to generate an object beam, a filter configured to filter the object beam, a demagnification optical subsystem configured to demagnify the object beam, and a switchable grating stack configurable to direct the object beam to a set of directions towards the holographic material layer to interfere with the second light beam. In some embodimetns, the switchable grating stack includes a plurality of polarization gratings and/or a plurality of switchable waveplates arranged in a stack.
