Abstract: A method for measuring the quantity of super absorbent polymers (SAP) in a sample derived from absorbent sanitary products comprising at least one portion of a portion of cellulose and/or a portion of plastic in addition to a portion of SAP. The SAP contained in the sample comprise polymers of linear polyacrylate (LPA) and/or polymers of cross-linked polyacrylate (CLP A), the method comprises the steps of: a) placing a first aliquot of the sample in an aqueous solution comprising hydrogen peroxide and obtaining a suspension comprising a solid fraction SF1 and a liquid fraction LF1, b) after a period of time T1separating said solid fraction SF1 from said liquid fraction LF1, wherein said liquid fraction LF1 comprises the SAP portion made soluble by said aqueous solution comprising hydrogen peroxide, and said solid fraction SF1 comprises at least one of said cellulose portion and/or said plastic portion, c) weighing said solid fraction SF1, d) calculating the quantity of SAP contained in said sample as a function of the weight of said first portion of the sample and the weight of said solid fraction SF1.

Abstract: A method for separating the fraction of super-absorbent polymers (SAP) from post-consumer absorbent sanitary products, said post-consumer absorbent sanitary products further comprising at least one cellulose fraction and one plastic fraction. The method comprises at least the steps of sterilizing the post-consumer absorbent sanitary products and treating said post-consumer absorbent sanitary products by immersion in a bath with an aqueous solution containing at least one oxidizing compound. The oxidizing compound is preferably selected from the group consisting of sodium persulfate, potassium persulfate, ammonium persulfate, potassium monopersulfate, and hydrogen peroxide; preferably hydrogen peroxide. The treatment by immersion allows cross-link cleavage and solubilizing of the SAP contained in said post-consumer absorbent sanitary products, and obtaining a suspension comprising i) a solid fraction and ii) a liquid fraction, wherein the liquid fraction comprises linear polyacrylate (LPA) derived from the cross-link cleavage and solubilization of SAP.

Abstract: Method for measuring the quantity of super absorbent polymers (SAP) in a sample obtained from post-consumer absorbent sanitary products comprising at least one portion of a portion of cellulose and/or a portion of plastic in addition to a portion of SAP, said post-consumer absorbent sanitary products having been, preferably, previously subjected to at least one treatment comprising the separation of said portions; the SAP contained in said sample comprise linear polyacrylate polymers (LPA) and/or cross-linked polyacrylate polymers (CLP A), the method comprising the steps of : a) contacting a first fraction of the sample with an aqueous solution comprising a known quantity C0 of a water-soluble cation XY and obtaining a suspension comprising a solid fraction and a liquid fraction, b) after a period of time T1, separating the solid fraction from the liquid fraction and measuring the residual quantity C1 of said water-soluble cation XY in said liquid fraction, c) calculating the difference C0-C1 between the known quantity C0 and the quantity C1 of the cation XY remaining after the time period T1, d) contacting a second fraction of the sample with a solution comprising a salt for a period of time T2 and obtaining a suspension comprising a solid fraction and a liquid fraction, wherein said salt promotes the passage of said water-soluble cation XY of metabolic origin and not already bound to the SAP into said liquid fraction, e) separating the solid fraction from the liquid fraction and contacting, for a period of time T3, the solid fraction with a solution comprising an acid for displacing said water- soluble cation XY of metabolic origin already bound to the SAP and promoting its passage into said solution, f) measuring the quantity CB of said water-soluble cation XY contained in said liquid fraction obtained in step d) after the period of time T2, and the quantity CH of said water-soluble cation XY contained in said aqueous solution containing an acid, preferably HC1, after the time period T3, g) calculating the difference CH - CB, this difference being indicative of the quantity of said cation contained in the sample and derived from the metabolism and bound to the SAP, h) calculating the quantity of SAP contained in said sample as a function of the difference C0-C1 and of the difference CH-CB.

Abstract: A method for sterilizing and decontaminating post-consumer absorbent products polluted with organic compounds derived from human metabolism including drug residues, said post-consumer absorbent sanitary products comprising fractions of plastic, super-absorbent polymers (SAP), and optionally cellulose, the method comprising at least the steps of: sterilizing (SR) said absorbent sanitary post-consumer products by heating to a temperature equal to or less than 140°C, and to a pressure lower than 4 bar, decontaminating (DC) said post-consumer absorbent sanitary products of organic compounds by treating with an oxidizing composition comprising at least one compound selected from the group consisting of hydrogen peroxide, sodium percarbonate, potassium percarbonate, sodium perborate, potassium perborate, potassium monopersulfate, ammonium persulfate, sodium persulfate, potassium persulfate, and ozone. The at least one compound is contained in said oxidizing composition in an amount equal to or greater than 2% by weight with respect to the dry weight of the post-consumer absorbent sanitary products.

Abstract: A method for sterilizing and decontaminating post-consumer absorbent sanitary products contaminated by organic compounds deriving from human metabolism and comprising drug residue, said post-consumer absorbent sanitary products comprising fractions of plastic, super-absorbent polymers (SAPs), and optionally cellulose, the method comprising at least the steps of: i) sterilizing (SR) said post-consumer absorbent sanitary products by heating to a temperature equal to or lower than 140°C and at a pressure comprised between 1 bar and 3.6 bar to obtain sterilized post-consumer absorbent sanitary products; and ii) decontaminating (DC) from organic compounds said sterilized post-consumer absorbent sanitary products by means of an oxidizing treatment. The oxidizing treatment is carried out by putting the sterilized post-consumer absorbent sanitary products in contact with a gas containing ozone preferably at a temperature equal to or higher than 60°C, more preferably comprised between 60°C and 80°C. The sterilized post-consumer absorbent sanitary products subjected to the decontaminating step have a humidity of less than 80%, preferably comprised between 60% and 75%.
