Abstract: A bed (50) for a person is provided, the bed (50) having a head (52), a foot (54), and sides (56, 58). The bed (50) includes a frame (62, 300) and a deck (400) carried by the frame (62, 300). The deck (400) includes an upper deck portion (414) and a central, longitudinal recess (456) in the upper deck portion (414), the recess (456) being defined by a lower deck portion (430) and walls (438) connecting the upper and lower deck portions (414, 430). In addition, the bed (50) includes a mattress (550) having a planar, upwardly-facing patient surface (552), side portions (580) resting on the side deck portions, and a central projection (576) extending downwardly into the recess (456). The bed (50) also includes a first longitudinal deck section (404) coupled to the deck (400) to pivot about a pivot axis above the lower deck portion (430) between a generally horizontal position and a tilted position.

Abstract: A chair bed (50) for supporting a person is provided, the chair bed (50) including a frame (62, 300) and a deck (400) supported on the frame (62, 300). The deck (400) includes head, seat, and foot sections (404, 406, 410). A mattress (550) is mounted on the deck (400) and has an upwardly-facing patient surface (552) and head, seat, and foot portions (558, 560, 564) corresponding, respectively, to the head, seat, and foot sections (404, 406, 410) of the deck (400). The head section (404) of the deck (400) and the mattress portion (558) thereon is pivotable between a generally horizontal down position and an upward back-support position. A pair of side rails is mounted on each side of the bed. Each pair of side rails includes a body section side rail (804, 806) mounted to move with the seat section (406) and extending laterally adjacent the head and seat sections (404, 406) and a head section side rail (800, 802) mounted to move with the head section (404) and extending adjacent only the head section (404).
