Abstract: The invention describes an air filter (10), particularly of an internal combustion engine, particularly of a motor vehicle, with a filter housing (14) and a filter element (12). The air filter (10) comprises a supporting device by means of which the filter element (12) inserted in the filter housing (4) is clamped in the filter housing (14) at least in a supporting region at a distance from the seal (28) in the direction of insertion (116), said clamping being at least transverse to the direction of insertion (116), wherein the transverse tensioning is produced under cooperation of the filter element (12) with the inner sides of the filter housing (14) and through the insertion movement of the filter element (12). A filter element of such an air filter is also described.
