    摘要: A device that performs wireless actuation by inductive heating. The device includes a bladder configured to expand or retract, so as to change the bladder's interior area. The device also includes a container, fluidly coupled to the bladder via a connector, that houses a magnetic rod suspended in a fluid medium. The magnetic rod is configured to react to a magnetic field that produces a phase transition of the fluid medium, causing the fluid medium to be transferred to the bladder's interior area, via the connector, expanding the bladder. The device further includes an induction coil, disposed around the container, and the induction coil's first end is coupled to the container's interior. The device also includes an induction heater, coupled to the induction coil's second end, that powers the induction coil, such that the induction coil generates the magnetic field within the container.

    摘要: Devices and methods for measuring phosphate levels in a fluid, such as natural water, are disclosed. The devices and methods rely upon the anodic dissolution of molybdenum to generate a reagent from a phosphate-containing fluid, which is then measured electrochemically to determine a level of phosphate ions in the fluid. The different embodiments of devices used for performing this technique are transportable and have extended lifetimes when compared to existing devices used to measure phosphate levels in fluid. They can be used in situ at the source of a site to generate results within about two minutes, within about thirty seconds, and even within about ten seconds. They also consume much less energy and molybdenum per measurement. The disclosed embodiments include devices having one or two molybdenum electrodes, with one of the electrodes disposed near a working electrode. Various methods for determining phosphate levels in fluids are also provided.

    摘要: The synthesis of thiophene based conducting polymer molecualr actuators, exhibiting electrically triggered molecular conformational transitions is reported. Actuation is believed to be the result of conformational rearrangement of the polymer backbone at the molecular level, not simply ion intercalation in the bulk polymer chain upon electrochemical activation. Molecular actuation results from π-π stacking of thiophene oligomers upon oxidation, producing a reversible molecular displacement that leads to surprising material properties, such as electrically controllable porosity and large strains. The existence of active molecular conformational changes is supported by in situ electrochemical data. Single molecule techniques have been used to characterize the molecular actuators.

    摘要: A method of performing wireless actuation by inductive heating of magnetic particles. The method provides a bladder having an inner surface and an outer surface, the inner surface forming an interior area, the bladder configured to expand or retract so as to change an area of the interior area, (ii) a plurality of magnetic particles suspended in a fluid medium and disposed within the interior area, and (iii) a sleeve disposed on the outer surface of the bladder. The method excites the plurality of magnetic particles by application of an alternating magnetic field to which the particles reaction. The method causes, by the excited magnetic particles, a phase transition to the fluid medium within the interior area which causes the bladder to expand, such that the sleeve confining the bladder generates actuation from the expansion or retraction of the bladder.

    摘要: A massively parallel electrophoresis system comprised of capillaries, with means for parallel imaging of the capillary ends. The capillaries are aligned with parallel longitudinal axes and a set of ends that are substantially coplanar. The electrophoresis system has a source of excitation radiation for illuminating the ends while an imaging optical arrangement places substantially coplanar loci, one per capillary, within a focal region of the imaging optical arrangement. A detector module receives electromagnetic radiation that is emitted by fluorophores within the capillaries upon excitation by the excitation radiation and transmitted to the detector module by way of the imaging optical arrangement. A manifold may terminate the array of electrophoresis capillaries, wherein the manifold has a platen with a plurality of recessions for receiving each of a the ends of the array of capillaries, and a septum disposed adjacent to the platen for penetration by the ends of the array of capillaries when inserted into the platen. Electrophoresis products may be separated by segregating effluent from one or more capillaries of the array.
