Abstract: Alkyd resins are made with up to 50% lactide and a fatty acid or fatty acid precursor. The lactide is a mixture of meso-lactide with one or both of L- and D-lactides. The alkyd resins have excellent adhesion, impact resistance and abrasion resistance when cured. In addition, the alkyd resins, and lacquers and coating compositions made from them, have low viscosities. This allows for higher solids contents at equivalent viscosities, which in turn reduces volatile organic compounds.
