The force/displacement curve (30) obtained upon compression of the smoking article (10) at the location of the liquid release component (20) in a force/displacement test comprises a plurality of local minima (32) in the force level over a range of compression of at least 1 mm, wherein each of the local minima (32) corresponds to a reduction in the force level of at least 1 Newton.

A smoking article (10) incorporates a liquid release component of a sustained release liquid delivery material (20), the liquid delivery material comprising a closed matrix structure having a polymer matrix defining a plurality of domains. A liquid composition is trapped within the domains and is releasable from the closed matrix structure upon compression of the liquid release component. The polymer matrix is formed of one or more anionic polysaccharides cross-linked by multivalent cations. A filler comprising one or more amphiphilic polysaccharides is incorporated within the polymer matrix. The one or more amphiphilic polysaccharides of the filler are selected from starch chemically modified to be amphiphilic and starch derivatives chemically modified to be amphiphilic.

A method for the production of a flavour granule for a smoking article comprises the steps of: a) forming an inner core by compaction of particles of herbaceous plant material; b) providing a coating suspension of coloured binder particles comprising at least one colourant and at least one polymeric binder in a solvent; c) applying the coating suspension to the outer surface of the inner core to form an outer layer, wherein the coating suspension is applied to the inner core within a coating system and wherein within that coating system the vapour pressure of the solvent is greater than 5 kPa; and d) drying the outer layer to evaporate the solvent.

A method of producing an aerosol-generating element for an aerosol-generating article or system, comprises the steps of: preparing a matrix polymer solution comprising a matrix-forming polymer in water; adding a plurality of aerosol-generating formulation components to the matrix polymer solution to form an aerosol-generating solution, wherein the aerosol-generating formulation components comprise a polyhydric alcohol and at least one alkaloid or cannabinoid; forming a discrete portion of the aerosol-generating solution; adding the discrete portion of the aerosol-generating solution to a cross-linking solution of multivalent cations to cross-link the matrix-forming polymer; and removing the aerosol-generating element from the cross-linking solution and drying the aerosol-generating element.

There is provided an aerosol-generating element for use in an aerosol-generating article or system. The aerosol-generating element comprises a solid continuous matrix structure and an aerosol-generating formulation dispersed within the solid continuous matrix structure. The aerosol-generating formulation is trapped within the solid continuous matrix structure and releasable from the solid continuous matrix structure upon heating of the aerosol-generating element. The solid continuous matrix structure is a polymer matrix comprising one or more matrix-forming polymers. The aerosol-generating formulation dispersed within the solid continuous matrix structure comprises at least one alkaloid or cannabinoid compound and a polyhydric alcohol. Further, the aerosol-generating formulation dispersed within the solid continuous matrix structure accounts for at least 80 percent by weight of a total weight of the aerosol-generating element.
