Abstract: In a method for operating a portable electronic device an ambient temperature (T s ) of the portable electronic device (2) is sensed by means of a temperature sensor (1). It is further detected if a rechargeable energy storage (22) of the portable electronic device (2) is in a process of being recharged. If the energy storage (22) is detected to be in a process of being recharged a compensated ambient temperature (T A ) is determined dependent on at least the sensed ambient temperature (T s ) and dependent on information (P i ) related to a charging current for recharging the energy storage (22).
