Abstract: A rivet delivery apparatus and method which is configured to drop a rivet into a position such that the rivet can be threaded onto a guide wire and shot along the guide wire, such as to a rivet tool for broaching. Preferably, the rivet delivery apparatus includes a means to clamp the guide wire at two positions - a first position before a rivet is threaded onto the guide wire, and a second position after the rivet has been threaded onto the guide wire. Specifically, preferably the guide wire is clamped in a first position, and the rivet delivery apparatus includes a plate which shifts, causing a single rivet to fall in place for threading onto the guide wire. Then, the guide wire is undamped, moved to the second position such that the rivet threads onto the guide wire, and the guide wire is clamped. Then, the rivet is shot along the guide wire, the guide wire is undamped, moved to the first position, and clamped again so that a new rivet can be received and threaded onto the guide wire.

Abstract: An autofeed speed rivet tool (22) and method which does not require a mandrel (40) to be constantly withdrawn and re-stocked, is very efficient and can be used in a flow line application without requiring the line to be stopped to re-load the tool (22) with rivets (12). A flexible tube (10) carries rivets (12) to a tool (22), along a guide wire (14). A flexible, inner tube (16) may carry the rivets (12), and nylon balls (18) may be provided on an outer tube (20) where the nylon balls (18) work as joints, and allow the outer tube (20) to compress without shortening the center line. The tool (22) may incorporate a plurality of inventive concepts, such as spoons (46) with pivotable blades (56) which grip the mandrel very much forward of the end of the mandrel (40), a transfer mechanism (212), rivet centering mechanisms (384) and a mechanism for longitudinally managing the mandrel (386).

Abstract: An automatic rivet loading module (20) which includes a pusher mechanism (28), a gripper mechanism (26), a mandrel receptacle (30), mechanisms (34, 36) for moving mandrels in the mandrel receptacle (30), and a tool activation device (24). The gripper mechanism (26) receives a rivet (52), and a mandrel (80) is moved through the rivet (52) such that the rivet (52) threads onto the mandrel (80). The gripper mechanism (26) moves out of the way while the pusher mechanism (28) pushes the mandrel (80) down. The pusher mechanism (28) then retracts, and the gripper mechanism (26) closes and is ready to receive another rivet (52). This process is repeated until the mandrel (80) is full of rivets (52). The mandrel receptacle (30) is rotatable such that the loaded mandrel swings to a position under the tool activation device (24) to be loaded into a rivet tool. As the loaded mandrel is swung under the tool activation block (37), a new mandrel is swung under the gripper mechanism (26), in position for loading with rivets (52).
