Abstract: In some embodiments, the present disclosure pertains to a radiation absorbing composition. In some embodiments, the composition includes a base material and one or more isotopes associated with the base material. In some embodiments, the one or more isotopes have an individual or combined thermal neutron cross section of more than 50 barns. In some embodiments, the present disclosure pertains to methods of absorbing neutrons from an environment by associating the environment with the radiation absorbing compositions of the present disclosure such that the association results in the absorption of neutrons from the environment onto the composition. Additional embodiments of the present disclosure pertain to methods of preparing the radiation absorbing compositions.
