Abstract: A misfire detection system (300) comprising an ignition system (303) including an ignition coil (107), an ion current measurement circuit (302) electrically connected to the ignition coil (107) for measuring an ion current generated from a spark plug (106), and a signal processor (401) for processing and conditioning the ion current measured by the ion current measurement circuit (302) to determine occurrence of a misfire in the IC engine, is disclosed. The ignition coil (107) comprises a primary winding (101) and a secondary winding (103), where a first end (101B) of the primary winding (101) is electrically connected to a first end (103B) of the secondary winding (103). Misfire detection improves reliability and durability of the IC Engine.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a system (100) for determining an age of a catalytic converter (110). The system (100) includes a first lambda sensor (120), a second lambda sensor (140), and an Engine Control Unit (ECU) (150) coupled with the first lambda sensor (120), the second lambda sensor (140) and an engine (130), the ECU (150) configured to: determine an operating condition of the vehicle comprising an operating speed of the engine (ωOP), and an operating intake manifold pressure (MAPOP) and/or a gear position (GPOP); measure a phase shift (ᶲ) between the second signal and the first signal at the determined operating condition for a rich air fuel mixture and/or a lean air fuel mixture injected in the engine (130); and estimate the age of the catalytic converter (110) based on the operating condition and the measured phase shift (ᶲ).

Abstract: An event detection system (200) for determining occurrence of an event in an internal combustion engine (201) comprising an ion current measurement circuit (107), a predetermined number of frequency band limiter modules (203), a predetermined number of frequency domain conversion units (204), and an ion signal analyzer (206) is disclosed. The frequency band limiter modules (203) generate band filtered ion current signals from a received ion current signal generated during a spark event in a spark plug (106). The frequency domain conversion units (204) convert the band filtered ion current signals to frequency domain to obtain digital ion current signals. The ion analyzer analyzes an amplitude of each of the digital ion current signals with an amplitude threshold of each of the digital ion current signals to determine occurrence of the event in the engine. Misfire detection ensures vehicles adhere to OBD II regulatory norms imposed by Regulatory Bodies.
