Abstract: A reader assembly (20) for reading a data carrier (48) having at least one data track located at a prearranged data track position thereon. The reader assembly includes a transducer (30) having at least one data pickup element on a front face thereof. A guide element (23) defines a guide slot having two side wall members and a bottom wall member for guiding a data carrier (48) through the reader assembly (20). One side wall member has an access window (55) which permits communication between the transducer (30) and the data carrier (48). A frame element (32) carries the transducer (30) in a prearranged location thereon. The guide element (23) and the frame element (32) include a cooperative registration arrangement providing multiple registered positions for reading different data tracks. A pair of resilient hook arms (51, 52) on the guide element (23) cooperative with a pair of hook engaging surfaces (65A, 65B) on the frame element (32) to hold the two elements together.

Abstract: Electronic circuit apparatus (20) in the form of a transaction terminal and including a removable circuit component in the form of a portable memory cartridge. The terminal has a housing (21) with a wall defining an opening (32) for inserting the removable circuit component (34). A switch (43) is mounted within the housing means substantially in the vicinity of the opening and is connected between a source of electric power and the removable circuit component to control application of power to the removable circuit component. A carrier (33, 35) arrangement carries the removable circuit component between a connected position within the housing and a disconnected position for removal from the housing through the opening. The carrier including a switch actuator (39) and a cooperative interlock means. The switch actuator operates the switch to be ON and simultaneously locks the carrier within the housing. The switch actuator also functions to turn the switch OFF and simultaneously unlock the carrier for removal from the housing.

Abstract: A data terminal (20) having a card reader assembly (23) for reading a data card having at least a pair of magnetic stripes (T1, T2, T3) formed thereon at adjacent ones of at least three defined magnetic data track locations thereon. The terminal includes a read head (30) having two magnetic pickup elements (30B and 30C) on a front face thereof, the pickup elements being separated by a distance corresponding generally to the distance between the separate magnetic data track locations on the data card. A housing assembly defines a card guide slot (44) adapted to guide a data card during a manual swipe of the card through the card reader assembly. The card guide slot (44) comprises first (37) and second (38) opposite side wall sections and a bottom wall section (39) with one of the side wall sections defining an access aperture (29) for admitting the read head into the card guide slot. A read head positioning arrangement is cooperatively associated with the card guide slot for mounting the read head in a preselected position relative to the bottom wall section of the card guide slot such that the magnetic pickup elements are positioned for detecting a prearranged set of magnetic data tracks located at one of the upper two data track locations and the lower two data track locations.

Abstract: A point of sale terminal (20) having a reader assembly for reading a data card (48) having data stored on at least one data track thereon. The terminal includes a housing defining a guide slot (29) location for the data carrier and a transducer for detecting data stored on the data track. A removable guide element (23) is mounted to the housing at the data carrier slot location. This guide element (23) has at least a bottom wall portion (39) defining a bottom guide surface of a guide slot for the data card and one major sidewall portion (37) defining one side guide surface of a guide slot (29). An access window (50) is formed in the major sidewall portion. A mounting arrangement mounts the transducer at a prearranged location with the access window for accurate detection of data stored on the data track as the data card (48) is manually swiped through the guide slot (29).
