摘要: In forming the casting unit (6) an intermediate casting (Figure 6) is made consisting of a monolithic body, which is annular in shape and has a vertical axis (10), an annular flange (72) outturned about the axis, a set of lugs (110) monolithically outstanding in the aperture thereof, and a groove (114) about the outer periphery of the casting in the upper portion, with mullions (20) monolithically upstanding, adjacent the outer periphery of the groove, to form ports (112) a series of holes (118) is drilled through the inner portion, to interconnect the groove with the cavity (108) in the lower end of the casting. Where the liquid coolant discharge means is a liquid coolant box, a leakage detector (17) is provided. The leakage is discharged at the bottom of the casting unit.

摘要: The annular body of the mold (38) in the unit has an annular case (68) at the bottom. The case is thick axially of the mold, forming the greater portion of the axial length of the mold at the outer periphery at the top, the case has an annular plate forming flanges (74) overhanging the case and enabling the unit to be lowered into a casting table, and supported on the table at the flanges. The case defines the lower cavity opening, and the coolant outlet (58). The case is monolithic, and has an annular sump (75) at the tip covered by the plate (66) forming a coolant chamber. A graphite casting ring (152) may be circumposed about the inner periphery lining the upper end portion of the cavity; and a refractory hot top ring (118) may be circumposed about the upper end opening of the cavity.

摘要: A method and apparatus to control the rate at which molten metal is initially fed to a plurality of continuous casting molds (20). Elevation sensors (102, 190) are suspended from beams (68) which in turn are suspended from an elongated rack (56). The sensors generate a signal used to control valve mechanisms (86). During the initial filling phase of the mold (20), the sensors (102, 190) are locked into an initial position in which molten metal is fed to the molds at a specific rate. When the molten metal in the individual molds reaches a specific intermediate level, triggers (66) are activated which allows the elevation sensors (102, 190) to assume control of the rates at which molten metal is fed to the molds. The elevation sensors (102, 190) control the height of the metal columns in the molds at a constant height with respect to the position of the elongated rack (56). After a period of time in which the height of molten metal in the individual molds (20) have established equilibrium, the elongated rack (56) is elevated at a controlled rate to an operating position. In turn, the molten metal in the respective molds is raised to an operating position at a controlled rate.

摘要: An ingot emerging from the exit end (10) of an open ended mold (2), is direct cooled by charging liquid coolant into an annular retention chamber (32) circumposed about the exit end, and discharging the coolant from the chamber onto the ingot surface through a first passage (14) opening into the exit end and communicating with the chamber at an opening (50) therein. A second passage (46) is formed in the chamber which is serially interconnected with the first passage (14) at the chamber opening (50) and operable to deliver the coolant to the first passage at an increased rate of flow, relative to the rate at which the coolant was charged into the chamber. Pressurized gas is forced into the coolant flow through a body (72) of solid but porous, gas-permeable material incorporated into the wall (60) of the second passage at the surface thereof which extends generally parallel to the flow of coolant in the second passage.
