    Abstract: A stapling apparatus for performing anastomosis on hollow organs consists of two combinable L-shaped tools, a clip retaining tool and a staple retaining tool. Each tool is provided with an elongated handle and a C-shaped jaw. In combined configuration the C-shaped jaw of the clip retaining tool is positioned below the C-shaped jaw of the staple retaining tool with the respective staples in registration with respective underlying clips. The C-shaped jaws provide gaps which permit ingress and egress of hollow organ ends. A staple firing mechanism is operated from the proximal top end of one of the handles of the apparatus whereby downward pressure is applied uniformly and simultaneously against the top of all staples to force them from their retaining sockets, through the hollow organ ends, and into stapling engagement with the respective underlying staple retaining clips.

    Abstract: A stapling apparatus (10) for performing anastomosis on hollow organs (35,36). The apparatus consists of two combinable tools (1 1, 12) which are L-shaped, one tool (1 1) for retaining staple retaining clips (21), and the other tool (12) for retaining staples (31). The L-shaped tools (1 1,12) are each provided with an elongated handle (13,23) and a C-shaped jaw (16,26) positioned at a distal bottom end (15,25) of the handle in a plane substantially transverse to the handles of the tools. When the two tools (1 1,12) are combined, the C-shaped jaw (16) retaining a series of staple retaining clips (21) is positioned below the C-shaped jaw (26) retaining the arranged series of staples (31) with the respective staples (31) in registration with respective underlying clips (21) for stapling. The C-shaped jaws (16,26) provide gaps (17,27) which permit ingress and egress of hollow organ ends (35,36) to be stapled. A staple firing mechanism (63,60,58,50,51) is operated from the proximal top end (64) of one of the handles (12) of the stapling apparatus (10) whereby downward pressure is applied uniformly and simultaneously against the top (53) of all staples (31) to force them from their retaining sockets (52), through the hollow organ ends (35,36), and into stapling engagement with the respective underlying staple retaining clips (21 ). The C-shaped jaws (16,26) may be provided as hemostat jaws (16',26') for respectively clamping and retaining the hollow organ ends (35,36) prior to stapling.
