摘要:
A shipping system for a medical device, such as implantable lens for an eye, is provided that may be reconfigured from a shipping mode into an injection mode without manually handling the contained lens or other device. Upon manufacture, a lens may be placed within the system assembly in the shipping configuration. While in the shipping configuration, the lens is kept in its desired shape and within a selected environment. Upon arrival at the destination, the user may attach fittings for injection of the device into a body. The process of changing from the shipping to the injection mode deforms the device into a shape suitable for injection.

Described herein are devices and methods that dampen transient intraocular pressure including pressure spikes experienced by the eye. The illustrative embodiments attenuate pressure waves and, thus, reduce wall stresses in a non-compliant eye such that the optic nerve is protected from damage in an ocular hypertensive or glaucoma patient, or during traumatic ocular procedures, and the refractive disorders of myopia, hyperopia, and/or presbyopia are moderated or reversed. In one embodiment, a compressible attenuation device insertable within the chambers of the eye preferably has an expanded volume within the range of from about.01 cc to 7 cc. The attenuation device may include a valve for filling the attenuation device and a high vapor pressure media having a vapor pressure approximately equal to the intraocular pressure of the eye and a permeability of less than 1 ml/day at body temperature through an outer wall of the device.

An intraocular lens (IOL) assembly or method for correcting myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism using the intraocular lens assembly are provided. In particular, the intraocular lens assembly relates to intraocular lenses which provide accommodation. The intraocular lens assembly comprises a lens extending along an optical axis between an anterior optical surface and a posterior optical surface. The IOL has a circumferential edge disposed about the optical axis at a junction of anterior and posterior optical surfaces. The IOL assembly further has N haptics, where N is an integer greater than 1. Each haptic extends from an associated portion of the circumferential edge and along an associated haptic axis, hi addition, each haptic is loop-like or paddle-like and extends between end portions at opposite ends thereof. The end portions are joined to the lens at the circumferential edge. Each of the haptics includes M footplates extending symmetrically about its associated haptic axis, where M may be an integer greater than 0. The resultant vaulted structure provides an intraocular lens assembly that, when implanted in the eye allows accommodation.

An intraocular lens (30) has an optic and two fixation members (710). Each fixation member (710) has at least one connecting element (712) and a pincer element (714). The pincer element (714) has a side region (718) with a central portion (720) and opposed end portions (722). The pincer element (714) further has a pair of pincer arms (724) attached end-to-end from respective opposed end portions (722) of the side region (718). In one embodiment, the side region (718) has a first location disposed closer (760) to the optic (716) than the pincer gap (732) and a second side region (718) disposed further from the optic (716) than the pincer gap (732). The distance of both side regions (718) to the central-most portion (720) of the pincer gap (732) is substantially identical.

The invention represents a deformable artificial intraocular lens for implantation into the human eye. The lens (10) is used for implantation after cataract surgery. The lens optic consists of one smooth optical surface. The second optical surface is a series of annular concentric rings (14). The rings allow the lens to have extremely thin edges, which reduce glare, halos, and distortion. The extremely thin lens optic along with the thin haptic can be rolled, folded, or squeezed to pass through a small incision in the cornea or sclera of the human eye.

Featured is an injectable intraocular lens system including an insertion and injection device and an injectable intraocular lens. In its broadest aspects, the injectable intraocular lens is a deflated flexible bag that is disposed within the insertion and injection device prior to insertion into the eye. In use a portion of the insertion and injection device is inserted into the eye and the flexible bag is deployed out from an aperture in the inserted portion into the eye. Following depolyment, the insertion and injection device injects an optical medium, such as a liquid, into the interior of the flexible bag, thereby inflating the bag. In an illustrative embodiment, the amount of medium being injected isselected so that the inflated bag provides the desired corrective power to the intraocular lens so formed. Following injection of the medium, the interconnection between the insertion and injection device and the interior of the flexible bag is broken and a seal is formed so as to keep the medium within the flexible bag interior.
