Abstract:
A lactation aid and soothing garment suspends thermal management pads near the surface of a patient's breasts by means of an adjustable-length neck band passing behind the patient's neck. The thermal management pads contain a heat-absorbing material that can be heated or cooled, for example in a microwave oven or a refrigerator, to apply heat or cold therapy to the breasts. Some embodiments comprise separable nipple soothers that can be heated or cooled to a different temperature so that the nipples can receive different temperature therapy than the bulk of the breast. Some embodiments facilitate the use of a mechanical breast pump while the thermal therapy is underway. Features of an embodiment allow a patient to wear the garment in a variety of ways in addition to around the neck (e.g., around the waist).
Abstract:
A thermal therapy device including a hollow roller having a non-uniform cross-section along its length and a thermally conductive external surface. Two end caps, one on each end of the hollow roller, which, in combination with the thermally conductive external surface of the hollow roller, collectively define a thermal-medium-receiving reservoir and a central axis about which the hollow roller may rotate. A pair of pins, one on each of the end caps, are longitudinally aligned along the central axis.
Abstract:
Cushions made of a plastic material are frequently used for cold and warm compressors. Cold compressors can be repeatedly cooled in refrigerators or freezers so that new compressors are not necessary for each cold application. The same applies to warm compressors. Said compressors are however unsatisfactory in most cases due to the fact that the plastic covering often slips off the compressor making it uncomfortable to use. Said disadvantages are prevented due to said invention as a cushion cover layer is used which adapts itself to the shape of the body, even in the cold state, and undergoes heat transmission.

Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for improving administration of drugs through the use of heat and other physical means. The present invention relates to the use of heat and other physical means (100) in conjunction with specially designed dermal drug delivery systems (120), conventional commercial dermal drug delivery systems, or drugs delivered into a sub-skin depot site (134) via injection and other methods to alter, mainly increase, the drug release rate from the dermal drug delivery systems or the depot sites to accommodate certain clinical needs.
Abstract:
A utensil (12) for use, for example, in the home or in restaurants, with a microwave oven for heating food preparation or service vessels (such as a dinner plate (10)) and the food in such vessels. The utensil (12) includes a matrix material (32) and a microwave absorptive material (34). The utensil (12) may also be configured for direct conductive heat transfer heating of food into which the utensil is immersed. Alternatively, an appliance (56) for applying therapeutic dry or moist heat to the human body may use pellets of the matrix (32) and microwave absorptive material (34) in a flexible moisture and heat transmissive body (62).
Abstract:
A method is shown for applying heat to a localized area such as a joint of the human body. A malleable heating pad (10) is provided which can be applied to the localized area by molding the heating pad about the localized area. The heating pad (10) includes a layer of uncured, microwaveable rubber (11) formed from a rubber matrix having blended therein an electromagnetic absorptive material. The heating pad (10) is heated to a temperature above ambient by exposing the heating pad (10) to microwave energy and the pad (10) is then applied to the affected area by molding the pad (10) about the localized area.
