Abstract:
A drainage apparatus for draining fluid from a patient. The apparatus comprises an evacuated container, a manifold disposed over an opening of the container with said opening covered by a seal. The manifold comprises a twist-actuated plunger, a drainage line receiving port and a through-hole into which the twist-actuated plunger is received. On twist actuation, the plunger is operable to puncture the seal and thereby fluidly connect the drainage line receiving port to the container and expose the drainage line receiving port to a partial vacuum of the container.
Abstract:
A system for monitoring medical waste fluids obtained from one or more patients includes a sending unit associated with each of the one or more patients, and a remote data storage system. The sending unit includes a container for receiving the fluids from a patient via an inlet tube, a device for obtaining information relating to at least one aspect of the fluids in said container, a processor programmed to receive the information from said device and to determine a volume of the fluids, and a transmitter for transmitting data including the determined volume. The remote data storage system includes a receiver for receiving the transmitted data for storage within the remote data storage system.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a chest drainage system (100) for creating and maintaining a sub-atmospheric pressure within the pleural cavity and/or the mediastinum of a patient(P). The system has a chest drainage unit (CDU, 10) with an internal cavity (C) having a first chamber part (C1, 11) and a second chamber part (C2, 12) with an air outlet from the CDU, and a liquid seal chamber (LSC, 13). The second chamber part (C2, 12)of the chest drainage unit is connected to a carbon dioxide sensor (CO2S, 15) for detecting carbon dioxide in any air passing through the liquid seal chamber (LSC, 13), the carbon dioxide sensor being capable of detecting carbon dioxide by a visible color change from a chemical reaction occurring in the carbon dioxide sensor between carbon dioxide and a detector reactant (DC) positioned in the carbon dioxide sensor. Preliminary test performed by the inventor have demonstrated that the present invention is very effective in determine whether, or not, carbon dioxide is present in the air passing through the chest drainage unit, this information being highly important in the subsequent decision of continuing the treatment with the chest drainage system.
Abstract:
A single use pleural drainage set for medical use, which allows drainage by all physicians of air (pneumothorax), blood (hemothorax) and all other liquids (hydrothorax) accumulated abnormally in the thoracic cavity (pleural space (I)).
Abstract:
A filtration system for use in connection with a central vacuum system in a hospital or other medical facility. In certain aspects, the filtration system comprises a removable filter for removing contaminants; a fitting adapted for connection to a central vacuum source/system which provides constant suction, which fitting is positioned between the filter and the central vacuum source; a flow control valve positioned between the filter and the fitting; wherein the relative positions of the fitting, flow valve and filter prevent contaminants from being discharged into the central vacuum system. In other aspects, the system provides variable filter life based upon variable flow.

Abstract:
A surgical suction device including: a) a housing defining an internal chamber and including: i) an inlet for receiving material extracted from a subject via a hollow tip including one or more suction openings for receiving the materials from a surgical site on the subject; and, ii) an outlet for coupling the housing to a suction source to allow material to be drawn therethrough; and, b) a mixing apparatus including one or more mixing members positioned inside the chamber for agitating material passing through the chamber from the inlet to the outlet in use to thereby prevent the material clogging the outlet.
