In present invention, a glass material which is superhydrophilic at least in air and superoleophobic when submerged in water is provided. Additionally, a process for making the glass material from waste glass through a green and sustainable route is provided. The process comprises crushing the waste glass to form powder through ball milling, dispersing the crushed waste glass in a solvent to form a dispersion, coating said dispersion onto a substrate, drying the coated substrate and subjecting the dried substrate to a hydrothermal treatment for less than 24 hours in the presence of an aqueous medium (e.g. deionized water). The resultant glass comprises a porous layer comprising interconnected silica-based fibers and exhibit excellent performance in the selective separation of a wide range of oil/water mixtures, even under various harsh conditions. Furthermore, the glass material can remove water-soluble contaminants simultaneously during the oil/water separation process, leading to multifunctional water purification.

A composite filter media of a nanofiber layer that includes nanofibers formed from non-polar, non-conductive thermoplastic polymers using a solution spinning process to form the nanofibers directly onto a conductive layer is presented, along with the associated methodology for making such media. The conductive layer includes at least about greater than about 5 wt.% conductive fibers, Z-directional conductivity and a uniform surface conductivity of at least about 10 -7 microsiemens.

Method for preparing a membrane from fibril cellulose comprises - supplying fibril cellulose dispersion on a filter layer, - draining liquid from a fibril cellulose dispersion by the effect of reduced pressure through the filter layer that is impermeable to fibrils of the fibril cellulose but permeable to the liquid to form a membrane sheet on the filter fabric, - applying heat on the opposite side of the membrane sheet to the membrane sheet while continuing draining of the liquid through the filter layer by pressure difference over the filter layer, and - removing the membrane sheet from the filter layer as a freestanding membrane.
