A cutting insert (20) comprising a cutting portion and a cooling portion. The cutting portion has a rake surface (26), a relief surface (28) and a cutting edge (24) defined at the intersection between the rake surface (26) and the relief surface (28). The cooling portion has an operative surface and a cooling nozzle (32) integrally formed therewith. The nozzle (32) is spaced from the cutting edge (24) and having a cooling aperture (CA2) directed at the cutting edge (24) at an acute angle with respect to the rake surface (26). The operative surface is one of the rake surface (26) and a surface of the cutting element other than the rake surface (26), disposed at a location more remote from the cutting edge (24) than the rake surface (26), so that the rake surface (26) is disposed between the cutting edge (24) and the cooling aperture (CA2).

A double-sided cutting insert may generally comprise: a top surface; a bottom surface; at least one side surface interconnecting the top surface and the bottom surface and forming at least one cutting edge; a through hole extending between the top surface and bottom surface; and wherein each of the top surface and bottom surface comprise an anti-rotation element comprising a single recess comprising a generally cyclic conical periphery. Each of the top surface and bottom surface may comprise at least one cyclic conical face. The recess may comprise a geometry that is complementary to the at least one cyclic conical face of the projection in an insert receiving pocket in a tool holder. A cutting tool incorporating one or more of the cutting inserts, and methods of making and using the cutting inserts are also described.

The present invention generally relates to a cutting tool. The objective of the present invention is to provide a cutting tool, which is configured to be simple in structure, while being capable of reliably securing a cutting insert to the pocket part of the main body of the tool. The cutting tool of the present invention is configured to have a cutting insert and a main body, wherein said cutting insert comprises an upper surface, a lower surface and a side surface connecting the upper surface and the lower surface, and wherein said main body comprises a pocket part where the cutting insert is mounted.

A milling cutter (10) for performing plunge and face cutting operations on a workpiece with cutting inserts (36) having different shapes is provided that comprises a plurality of cutting inserts (36) having side and transverse cutting edges (43a,b); (44a,b), the transverse cutting edges (44a,b) being of different shapes for different inserts (36), a cutter body (12) having a plurality of recessed insert seats (26) for securably receiving the inserts (36), including a top shoulder (31) spaced apart from the transverse cutting edges (44a,b) of the inserts (36) for allowing the insert seat (26) to receive inserts (36) having transverse edges (44a,b) of different shapes, and a support structure for preventing relative movement between the cutting inserts (36) and their respective seats (26) along the side and transverse insert edges (43a,b); (44a,b). In the preferred embodiment, the support structure includes a rail-like projection (50) extending out of the back face (40) of the cutting inserts (36) that is substantially parallel to the side cutting edges (43a,b) of the insert (36), and a complementarily-shaped slot (32) in the bottom wall (28) of the seat, in combination with a shoulder (51a,b) formed in the insert seat (26) near but spaced apart from the top shoulder (31) of the seat (26), and a complementary recess (52) in the insert substantially parallel to its transverse cutting edges (44a,b).

A reaming tool (21; 21') having a diameter (D) and an axis of rotation (AR) and comprising a tool holder body (43; 43') and at least one one-piece indexable reaming insert (23). The reaming insert comprises more than one cutting edge (25A, 25B). The tool holder body has an insert clamp (47) for clamping the reaming insert relative to the tool holder body. The cutting edge extends beyond a periphery of the tool holder body when the reaming insert is clamped relative to an abutment surface (31) of the tool holder body. The reaming insert comprises a head (27) and an integral mounting portion (33), the tool holder body having an opening (45) in which the integral mounting portion of the cutting insert is disposed. A cutting insert mountable in an insert pocket of a milling cutter and capable of effectively absorbing a radially outward force during high speed machining and high ramp machining. The cutting insert has a top surface, a bottom surface, peripheral surfaces extending between the top surface and the bottom surface, a mounting hole extending through the top surface and the bottom surface, a protrusion portion protruding from the bottom surface, and a pair of lower inclined surfaces at the bottom surface. The lower inclined surface faces to the protrusion portion and is inclined outwardly upwardly. The protrusion portion extends across the mounting hole and has a lateral surface facing radially outwardly of the milling cutter. The lateral surface selectively contacts or does not contact the insert pocket depending on a revolution speed of the milling cutter.
