An apparatus for forming a glass ribbon includes a forming body with opposing first and second forming surfaces. An end dam assembly includes a first forming dam wall extending in a draw direction along a first end of the first forming surface. A second forming dam wall can extend in the draw direction along a first end of the second forming surface. A first bridge dam wall can be disposed on an upper surface of the forming body and extend between and join the first forming dam wall and the second forming dam wall. Each of the forming body and the end dam assembly is formed from a refractory material. A method includes flowing a molten glass through a trench defined by forming dam walls extending in the draw direction along opposing first and second ends of the forming surface.

According to one embodiment, a method of forming a laminated glass ribbon may include flowing a molten glass core composition and a molten glass cladding composition in a vertically downward direction. The molten glass core composition may be contacted with the molten glass cladding composition to form the laminated glass ribbon comprising a glass core layer formed from the molten glass core composition and a glass cladding layer formed from the molten glass cladding composition. Core beads located proximate an edge of the glass core layer and clad beads located proximate an edge of the glass cladding layer may be compressed while the glass core layer and the glass cladding layers have viscosities greater than or equal to the viscosity at their softening points as the laminated glass ribbon is drawn in the vertically downward direction.

A laminated glass article includes a glass core layer and a glass cladding layer adjacent to the glass core layer. At least one of the glass core layer or the glass cladding layer is a tinted layer. The tinted layer can include a tinting agent that imparts a color to the tinted layer.

A method of cutting a laminate glass article is disclosed. The method comprises heating at least a portion of a laminate glass article to a reheat temperature. The laminate glass article has a core layer and a first cladding layer and is in stress characterized by a thermally-induced differential stress between the core layer and first cladding layer. The laminate glass article having been set at a setting temperature and the reheat temperature is lower than the setting temperature. The heating of the laminate glass article reduces the thermally-induced differential stress between the core layer and first cladding layer. The method may further comprise scoring the laminate glass article in the heated portion to create a score in the laminate glass article along a cutting line and bending the laminate glass article at the score to cut the glass.

A method for strengthening an edge of a glass laminate including a glass core layer positioned between a first glass clad layer and a second glass clad layer may include forming a channel in the edge of the glass laminate. Sidewalls of the channel may be formed from the first glass clad layer and the second glass clad layer. Glass filler material having a filler coefficient of thermal expansion greater than a core coefficient of thermal expansion may be positioned in the channel. The glass filler material and the sidewalls of the channel may be fused to the second glass clad layer thereby forming an edge cap over the channel. The edge of the glass laminate is under compressive stress after the glass filler material is enclosed in the channel.

A laminated glass article includes a core layer and a clad layer directly adjacent to the core layer. The core layer is formed from a core glass composition. The clad layer is formed from a clad glass composition. An average clad coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) is less than an average core CTE such that the clad layer is in compression and the core layer is in tension. A compressive stress of the clad layer decreases with increasing distance from an outer surface of the clad layer within an outer portion of the clad layer and remains substantially constant with increasing distance from the outer surface of the clad layer within an intermediate portion of the clad layer disposed between the outer portion and the core layer. A thickness of the intermediate portion of the clad layer is at least about 82% of a thickness of the clad layer,

A method includes supplying a conjoined molten glass stream to an overflow distributor. A cross section of the conjoined molten glass stream includes a first cross sectional portion and a second cross sectional portion. The first cross sectional portion includes a first glass composition. The second cross sectional portion includes a second glass composition different than the first glass composition. The first glass composition is flowed over a first transverse segment of a weir of the overflow distributor. The second glass composition is flowed over a second transverse segment of the weir of the overflow distributor.

A glass article includes a glass core layer and a glass cladding layer adjacent to the core layer. A coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the core layer is greater than a CTE of the cladding layer. The core layer has a tensile stress, and the cladding layer has a compressive stress. A retained strength of the glass article is a strength determined after abrasion of an outer surface of the glass article with 1 mL of 90 grit SiC particles for 5 seconds at an abrasion pressure, and a ratio of the retained strength at an abrasion pressure of 25 psi to the retained strength at an abrasion pressure of 5 psi is at least about 0.3.

Disclosed is a laminated glass structure with one or more inner glass layers with at least one in tension and two outer glass layers in compression wherein one or both of the outer layers at least partially wrap around the one or more inner layers at one or more of the edges of the laminated glass structure. Also disclosed is a process for forming a laminated glass structure, comprising providing a laminated glass structure, removing at least some glass from at least one the edges of the structure to produce a concavity in at the at least one edge and applying heat to the at least one edge.
