An oil spill cleanup device is described. The device includes a container and at least one flexible hollow elongated member extending from the container. The device floats in water and can be used to collect and separate oil from the contaminated water. Water is collected by the elongated member, which has several exterior one-way valves that allow contaminated water to enter the member. The contaminated water is pushed towards and into the container by the wave motions of the surrounding water. The elongated member has internal one-way valves that help to direct the contaminated water towards the container. Once in the container, the contaminated water can separate into water and oil due to differences in specific gravity. Multiple devices can be connected together to form a barrier for containing the contaminated water within a limited area.

The invention concerns one or more floating barriers for use together with a conventional floating barrier for use in collecting oil on a water surface. The floating barriers are of the kind where the submerged part is partially penetrable for water and oil, thereby providing an impeding but not blocking effect on a passing flow of water. The function of the floating barriers is based on the fact that by disposition upstream relative to the conventional floating barrier and together with the latter they will constitute a total system which can be moved through an oil-contaminated body of water with substantially greater speed than a conventional floating barrier, without leaking oil behind the floating barrier system. The invention particularly concerns conditions of the geometry, spacing and draught of the water-penetrable liquid barriers.

Method and apparatus for a low floating boom curtain (10) constructed of absorptive material made for use in waters polluted by oil, fuel, diesel fuel, chemicals such as dispersants or other petroleum based contaminants or the like wherein the boom curtain is comprised of an upper (12) and a lower (14) portion wherein the upper portion is the buoyant portion and the lower portion is a skirt portion, wherein the skirt portion has a weighted portion (16) on the bottom of the skirt portion so that together they form an absorptive boom curtain for removing oil from oil containing waters. The upper portion (12), which provides the main flotation for the device, has an internal float/foam member (18) which provides sufficient flotation and which foam member is wrapped in a single or double layer of absorptive material (51) and wherein the entire device is made of and or covered by absorptive material. The boom curtain has a strap (24) running longitudinally along it for interconnecting the individual curtain units wherein the strap may also have attachment rings (26) and interconnecting rings (28) for connecting individual units of the device so as to form a longer string of boom. The weighted portion (16) may be weighted by any suitable material, however, it is believed that sand will be the weight of choice since it is also readily available.

Preferably the agriculture residue material is reduced in size, adhesive added, consolidated to form panels or other shapes and heated to cure the adhesive. Preferably, the agriculture material is reduced in size from less than about 2 inches and the adhesive is present in an amount ranging from between about 2 % to about 20 % by dry weight. The products possess good absorption characteristics, durability and the ability to retain absorbed liquids upon application of pressure to saturated panels.

The invention has a float system (12) using a plurality of floats (18) arrayed along a flexible, stretch-resistant cork line (20), a susbtantially rectangular barrier (14) where the barrier is fixedly but detachably attached to the float system by a first attachment system, and an elongated weight device (16) which is fixedly but detachably attached to the bottom of the barrier. The detachable boom disclosed in the present invention can be anchored in a stationary position or towed behind a small-to-medium sized marine vessel using a towing bridle (72).

It is used for collecting oils, gasoil and other similar substances spilled at the surface of a water body or at sea, in order to stop pollution.
