In accordance with an embodiment of the invention, there is provided a device for generating electrical energy using a thermal cycle of a working gas. The device comprises at least one piston movably mounted in a container to form a working chamber between the at least one piston and the container, the working chamber containing the working gas performing the thermal cycle. An electrical circuit is mounted stationary relative to the container, the electrical circuit being electromagnetically coupled to provide a motive force to the at least one piston. An electronic power converter is electrically connected to the electrical circuit and to an electrical bus, and an electrical storage device is electrically connected to the electrical bus. The at least one piston is movably mounted such that its motion electromagnetically induces current in the electrical circuit. An electronic controller is electronically connected to the electronic power converter to control motion of the at least one piston to perform, in the thermal cycle, at least one of: (i) expanding the working gas beyond the volume at which compression of the working gas is begun within the thermal cycle or (ii) exhausting the working gas to a remaining volume less than the smallest volume of compressed gas within the thermal cycle. The electronic controller further controls flow of electrical energy to and from the electrical bus to effect a net positive average power transfer from the working gas to the electrical bus over the course of the thermal cycle.

The phase adjustment is achieved by passive electrical components and/or active feedback circuits. The components of the engine are arranged in a linear configuration which allows the provision of gas springs on each end of the assembly, one attached to the compression piston and one attached to the expansion piston. The provision of gas springs allows an increase in spring constant and thus an increase in operating frequency. Either or both of the motor and generator can be provided with two sets of windings. In the generator the use of two sets of windings allows the feedback to be separate from the output power of the machine. In the motor driving the compressor the two sets of windings allows the provision of a control input power.

The axes of the first FPS machines make the same angle with a central axis of motion and are equi-angularly spaced around the central axis. A second set of beta FPS machines are rigidly connected together and rigidly connected to the first set of machines. The second set of machines are arranged in a mechanically co-directional orientation that is the same as the mechanical orientation of the first set of beta FPS machines. The second set of machines are configured to reciprocate in thermodynamically synchronous reciprocation with each other but in thermodynamically opposed reciprocation to the first set. The FPS machines of the second set are identical to the FPS machines of the first set and have axes of reciprocation intersecting a point, which may be a point at infinity. The axes of the second set of FPS machines all make the same angle with the central axis of motion and are equi-angularly spaced around the central axis of motion.

Der Regenerator (11 bzw. 12) des mindestens einen thermischen Kopfes ist fest mit der Pulsröhre (7 bzw. 8) verbunden. The concentricity and coaxiality of a central bore through a piston for a free piston Stirling machine is improved with a piston that has a sleeve with a core constructed from at least two, separate, axially-engaging core components sealed within the sleeve. During fabrication, a central bore is machined through each of the core components. The piston is assembled by heating the sleeve and cooling the core components, inserting the core components into the sleeve and then allowing the sleeve to cool and the core components to warm. This drives the core components into sealed engagement with each other and with the sleeve and aligns the central bore coaxially with the outer cylindrical surface of the sleeve.
