Herein we describe shotgun shells each having a degradable wad comprising a polyhydroxyalkanoate polymer, as well as methods for ensuring that such wad degrades quickly after landing in an aquatic environment. Plastic, aquatic debris has a negative economic and ecological impact, and thus it is advantageous to use implements that will degrade into environmentally benign compounds. Incorporating a degradable wad into shotgun shells provides an effective, economical solution. Suitable degradable shotgun wads and methods are described herein.

The present invention relates to a hand grenade comprising a main body (10), an actuator (14) releasably fixed to the main body (10), an actuator-ejection mechanism, and a charge to be released, which includes an automatic-identification device (34) embedded in the actuator. The invention further relates to a grenade actuator of the EOT-type (Espoleta de Ogiva de Tempo, time fuse point), which comprises an automatic-identification device (34) embedded therein. The present invention can also materialize in the form of a method of manufacturing a hand-grenade actuator, according to which it is provided a housing for an automatic-identification device in the actuator body. Indeed, the method of manufacturing the actuator further in¬ cludes providing said housing with a cylindrical shape and then inserting an equally cylindrical automatic-identification device into said housing.

Manufacture is carried out in a continuous manner while simultaneously loading the blast holes in a device with mixing capability where (a) a less sensitive or non-explosive water- based matrix containing a cross-linkable polymer, (b) a cross- linking agent for cross-linking the polymer contained in the matrix, (c) a gas-generating agent, are mixed. The presence of the polymer distributed uniformly in the matrix together with the cross-linking agent results in a three-dimensional network formed by molecular polymer chains bound to one another in a short period of time after mixing. The process can be performed in trucks for loading explosives in blast holes having compartments for the different components of the mixture and one or several mixing devices allowing the manufacture of the final mixture which would be unloaded into the blast holes either by means of a pump or an auger.
