An apparatus having optical waveguides for providing a large FOV is disclosed. A first light engine projects light into an input diffractive coupler of a first waveguide at a first central angle. An output coupler of the first waveguide projects the light out of the first optical waveguide. A second light engine projects light into an input diffractive coupler of a second waveguide at a second central angle that is greater than the first central angle. An output coupler of the second waveguide projects the light out of the second optical waveguide to intersect with the light projected out of the first optical waveguide. The first waveguide may be used to project a first part of an image into a central portion of a user's vision. The second waveguide may be used to project a second part of the image into a peripheral portion of the user's vision.

The light distributor is configured to direct the first and second portions of the light beam toward the first and second entry portions, respectively. The light distributor entry portion and the first exit portion are aligned along a first axis. Die Erfindung betrifft einen Bildschirm (1), der in mindestens zwei Betriebsarten B1 für einen freien Sichtmodus und B2 für einen eingeschränkten Sichtmodus betrieben werden kann. Der Bildschirm (1) umfasst dabei eine flächenartig ausgedehnte Hintergrundbeleuchtung (2), die in beiden Betriebsarten Licht abstrahlt, in der Betriebsart B1 in einen nicht eingeschränkten und in der Betriebsart B2 in einen eingeschränkten Winkelbereich. In Betrachtungsrichtung vor der Hintergrundbeleuchtung (2) ist ein transmissiver Bildgeber (5) angeordnet. In Betrachtungsrichtung außerhalb des aktiven Bildwiedergabebereichs des Bildgebers (5) sind Leuchtmittel (4) angeordnet, und in Betrachtungsrichtung vor dem Bildgeber ist ein plattenförmiger Lichtleiter (3) angeordnet, welcher aus einem transparenten, thermoplastischen oder thermoelastischen Kunststoff und darin verteilten Streupartikeln besteht. In der Betriebsart B1 sind die Leuchtmittel (4) ausgeschaltet, so dass das von der Hintergrundbeleuchtung (2) ausgehende und sodann durch den Bildgeber (5) hindurchdringende Licht im Wesentlichen unbeeinflusst durch den Lichtleiter (3) hindurchtritt. In der Betriebsart B2 sind die Leuchtmittel (4) eingeschaltet, so dass das von der Hintergrundbeleuchtung (2) in einen eingeschränkten Winkelbereich abgestrahlte und durch den Bildgeber (5) hindurchdringende Licht von Licht überlagert wird, welches aufgrund der Einstrahlung von Licht aus dem Lichtleiter (3) diffus und/oder gerichtet in den Betrachtungsraum zurückstreut bzw. -reflektiert wird und/oder von diesem flächig über einen großen Winkelbereich in den Betrachtungsraum abgestrahlt wird. Dadurch wird die Restsichtbarkeit eines auf dem Bildgeber (5) dargestellten Bildes außerhalb des besagten eingeschränkten Winkelbereiches verringert.

The display includes a waveguide 12 that includes an image 16 formed from photoluminescent dyes on a surface of the waveguide which is activated by a first light source 14. A second light source 22 behind said waveguide produces a second image 24. A light filter 18 is positioned between the waveguide 12 and the second light source 22. The second light source 22 can illuminate a transparency, such as a translight, or a physical object providing an image that is viewable from the display when the second light source is illuminated and the first light source is not illuminated. The first image 16 is viewable when the first light source 14 associated with the waveguide is activated, emitting, for example, an ultraviolet light that activates the photoluminescent dyes, causing the first image to be viewable. The light filter 18 behind the waveguide enhances the quality of the emissive image and prevents the image on the transparency or the physical object from being seen when the second light source is not illuminated.

A method is described for fabricating an optical device that includes a light waves-transmitting substrate having at least two major surfaces and edges and a plurality of partially reflecting surfaces carried by the substrate, wherein the partially reflecting surfaces are parallel to each other and not parallel to any of the edges of the substrate. The method includes providing at least one transparent flat plate and plates having partially reflecting surfaces and optically attaching together the flat plates so as to create a stacked, staggered form. From the stacked, staggered form, at least one segment is sliced off by cutting across several plates and the segment is ground and polished to produce the light waves-transmitting substrate. The plates are optically attached to each other by an optically adhesive-free process.
