An optical fiber device includes a plurality of optical fibers that are bundled together within an impact mounted ferrule. A preferred impact mounted bundled optical fiber device includes two, three, four, seven, thirteen or nineteen optical fibers. In these devices the optical fibers are fixedly held in place by frictional contact between the optical fibers within the impact mounted ferrule tip. The impact mounted bundled optical ferrule can be utilized in many optical devices including add/drop device, bifurcation devices, signal combining devices, multiplexer devices, demultiplexer devices, isolator devices, as well as other types of optical signal processing devices.

Because the thin film wire-grid polarizer can be fabricated in very thin profile, the provision of a thin film wire-grid polarizer allows the optical polarization beam combiner/splitter device to be highly integrated and simultaneously realize a number of performance advantages of a thin film wire-grid polarizer over other types of polarizers utilized in various prior art polarization beam combiner/splitters.

A tunable optical filter is provided that includes an array of independently tunable filter elements. Each of the elements is located along a different optical path that extends between an input and an output port. Optical assemblies for receiving an incident optical signal for providing a filtered optical signal are also provided. In one embodiment, polarization independent spectral filtering can be achieved. Wavelength selectable add/drop multiplexers and demultiplexers, dynamic gain equalizers and attenuators, optical channel blockers and branch filters, switches, and modulators are also provided. Furthermore, methods for contructing and operating filters consistent with this invention are also provided.

The device includes a first lens (150), a second lens (160) and an optical bandpass filter (170). The first lens (150) and the second lens (160) are spaced from each other and define a common optical axis. The optical bandpass filter (170) is located between the first and the second lenses (150, 160). There are first and second fiber ports (110, 140) located at a first focal plane (152) and symmetrically displaced from the common optical axis in a plane. The device further includes third and fourth fiber ports (130, 120) at a second focal plane (162) and symmetrically displaced from the common optical axis in the same plane.
