The present application discloses a system comprising a compact curved grating (CCG) and its associated compact curved grating spectrometer (CCGS) or compact curved grating wavelength multiplexer/demultiplexer (WMDM) module and a method for making the same. The system is capable of achieving a very small (resolution vs. size) RS factor. The location; of the entrance slit and detector can be adjusted in order to have the best performance for a particular design goal. The initial groove spacing is calculated using a prescribed formula dependent on operation wavelength. The location of the grooves is calculated based on two conditions. The first one being that the path-difference between adjacent grooves should be ah integral multiple of the wavelength in the medium to achieve aberration-free grating focusing at the detector or a first anchor output slit even with large beam diffraction angle from the entrance slit or input slit, the second one being specific for a particular design goal of a curved-grating spectrometer.

An apparatus and method for transmitting a plurality of light signals is disclosed. The apparatus includes a splitter configured to split an incoming light signal into a plurality of light signals. Phase control units are included which modify the phase of the light signals. Waveguides are coupled to the phase control units. Each waveguide has a different propagation constant, that is different from adjacent waveguides and the difference between the propagation constants of any two adjacent waveguides is substantially larger than an effective coupling constant between said two adjacent waveguides. Coupling members couple the light signal in one of the plurality of waveguides to free space. The splitter may include output and/or input waveguides and a dispersion element splitting and/or combining: light.

Technologies are generally described to fabricate an optical circuit board with a non-linear gradient index (GRIN) optical backplane. An optical backplane with a non- linear GRIN may be formed as a circuit board enabling communicative coupling between at least two components on the circuit board and/or between one or more components and an optical interface via one or more optical pathways within the optical backplane. The components may be placed at a location along one or more surfaces of the non-linear GRIN optical backplane based on an approximate angle of incidence for the optical pathways between a component and other components to be coupled to the component. The components may be further placed to enable an optical communication signal projection from the optical interface to arrive at one or more of the placed components.
