According to the present invention, a method for the authentication, by a host device, of a storage device having a plurality of unit storage areas comprises the following steps: acquiring information on the distribution of locations of reference defective areas to be used for uniquely identifying the storage device; sampling the unit storage areas of the storage device; identifying the distribution of locations of physically defective areas among the sampled areas; determining the similarity between the acquired distribution of locations and the identified distribution of locations; and authenticating the storage device in accordance with the result of the determination.

Disclosed is a method for identifying content within a received information signal. The method comprises receiving (S6) an information signal; generating (S8) a first data set by selecting a sub-set of data (7) using filter data; and processing (S9) said information signal with reference to said first data set to determine whether said information signal comprises particular content. Advantageously, the method further comprises processing (S 12) the information signal with reference to a second data set (6) to determine whether said information signal comprises particular content. The invention allows content sharing sites such as YouTube to check whether uploaded files violate copyright rules in case the upload includes contents that was previously downloaded by the client. By keeping a list of contents that clients have downloaded, the server has an indication of a subset of contents that will likely be included in the next upload by the same client. As this subset is relatively small, a finer fingerprint resolution may be applied to this subset.

At least one speed-sensitive artifact (504, 606, 716, 718, 804, 902, 904) is placed in a data sequence (700) on the storage medium, the speed-sensitive artifact configured to provide a first error response when the data sequence is read at a first speed and a second error response different from the first error response when the data sequence is read at a second speed (1002). The first and second error responses are used to authenticate the medium as an authorized copy (1004, 1006). Preferably, access is granted to the medium if the artifact is detected (1008), and access is denied if the artifact is not detected (1010).

The invention relates to a method of authenticating a physical object using a helper data and a control value associated with a reference object, the method comprising: acquiring a metric data of the physical object, generating a first property set using a noise compensating mapping on input data derived from information comprising said helper data and metric data , establishing a sufficient match between said physical and reference object using said property set and control value. The method further comprising a step to generate a noise measure, the step comprising the following sub-steps: reconstructing the output of a noise robust mapping generated during the enrolment of the reference object using the noise compensating mapping, and generating the noise measure by calculating the difference between the input to the noise compensating mapping and the output of the noise robust mapping. Also provided are an apparatus and system configured to carry out the method.

The present invention relates to reproducing a unique identifier (ID) from a rec ord carrier (5), a data which has area for storing data and a defect management area for storing data reallocated from defective sectors and for storing realloc ation information. To prevent users from copying the unique identifier a reprodu ction apparatus is proposed comprising: - a reallocation information reading mea ns (7) for reading reallocation information from said defect management area ma rking a first predetermined non-defective sector in said data area as defective and as reallocated to a second sector in said defect management area, - a data r eading means (6, 8) for reading a first data unit from said first sector and for reading a second data unit from said second sector, and - an evaluation means 10) for evaluating said first data unit and said second data unit by comparison and/or combination to derive said unique identifier(ID ).
