Abstract:
. Described herein are systems and methods for digital data encryption, and more specifically, systems and methods for providing encryption keys for reading encrypted data. Optical media, particularly digital disks, are described where a laser reader accesses digital data on a disk. The disks are coated with a coating containing an encryption key to access encrypted data in the digital disk.
Abstract:
A system and method by which the playable surface of a digital optical storage media is protected from scratches that may develop when said media is placed against a flat surface is disclosed. Upon initial observation of the preferred embodiment of the present invention it appears like any number of a type of conventional optical storage media such as a compact disc (CD), digital versatile disc (DVD) or any type of optical-based digital storage media. However, after closer observation, it can be seen that a raised ring is provided along the outer perimeter of the media. The ring is approximately 1/64 to 1/8 of an inch higher than the recording surface and is approximately 3/32 of an inch in width. The ring is located in the blank space on the media where no recording is possible, thus the total playing time or storage space of the media is not affected. It is also envisioned that a similar ring along the perimeter of the inner hole could also be provided for additional protection. The use of the present invention allows for the protection of optical- based digital storage media should they be set upon a flat surface in a manner which is quick, easy and effective.
Abstract:
Abstract:
A protective cover (10) for protecting a read side of an optical disk (40), including a circumferential frame (14) for receiving and engaging the optical disk (40) and a shield (12). The frame (14) includes a continuous end wall (24), an annular base (20) extending radially inwardly from a lower edge (28) of the end wall (24) and a plurality of spaced apart tabs (26) extending radially inwardly from an upper edge (28) of the end wall (24) for engaging an upper surface (45) of an optical disk (40). The shield (12) is transparent and has an inner edge (17) defining a central opening (18), an outer edge (16) and a generally planar annular surface extending between the outer edge (16) and the inner edge (17). The shield (12) is carried by the annular base (20) for receiving and covering the read side (46) of the optical disk (40).
Abstract:
An optical disc such as a digital versatile disc (DVD) includes plural substrates which are bonded together to form a single disc structure. One of the substrates is manufactured so that regions of the substrate forming the central hub which is provided to receive the disc within its protective packaging case and in a disc player during playback operation have a thickness which is greater than the thickness of the reminder of the substrate, strengthening the central hub and improving the durability of the manufactured disc by increasing resistance to cracking failure along the inner diameter of the disc.
Abstract:
An optical disc for storage and retrieval of digital data, and a system and method for protecting the optical disc is disclosed. The optical disc has projections or embossments on one or both surfaces. When the optical disc is placed on a substantially flat surface such as a tabletop or a desktop, the projections act as pedestals that elevate the optical disc above the flat surface. The resulting gap or clearance helps prevent damage to the optical disc caused by contaminants on the flat surface or by defects in t he flat surface. The projections are sized to provide adequate clearance between the disc and the flat surface, while minimizing interference between the projections and components of optical disc readers and drives. The optical disc may also include one or more depressions that are sized and configured to receive projections from another disc, which facilitates stacking of the optical discs.
Abstract:
There is provided a new and useful protective cover for an optical disc of circular configuration having a circular aperture centred therein and having an outer edge. The protective cover comprises a sheet of film of generally circular configuration corresponding to the configuration of the disc, the film of a material that will not interfere with the read process of the disc when the cover is in place about the disc, and a plurality of clasps spaced about a circumferential edge of the film to engage the disc about its outer edge in a snap fit. The invention also relates to a method of applying such a protective cover to such an optical disc comprising the steps of holding the cover with the clasps in a closed position oriented relative to the film toward said disc, expanding the clasps to an open position wider than an outside diameter of the disc, placing the disc within the expanded clasps, concentric with the cover and returning the clasps to the closed position whereby they engage the disc about the outer edge in a snap fit.
Abstract:
A device (10) for locating a protective cover (50) on an optical disc (100), the device comprising a flat surface having projecting upwardly therefrom a shouldered boss (12) comprising positioning spigot (13) and a smaller location spigot (14), whereby a protective cover having a centre hole is positioned and located over the positioning spigot (13) and an optical disc (100) is positioned on the protective cover (50) with the location spigot (14) axially locating the disc over and co-axially with the cover whereby downward pressure on the disc towards the surface causes the disc to press against the cover for the cover to be accurately secured onto the disc.
