Abstract:
A protection system in which a shunt protection device at the interface terminals is optically triggered by sensor components within the circuit. This permits a variety of appropriate overvoltage detection thresholds to be defined at different nodes within the circuit. Preferably the shunt protection device is combined with one or more series protection devices which interrupt overcurrent.

Abstract:
A system and method for emulating phone extensions in a packet telephony distribution system include using a gateway (120) and an adapter (130). Signaling protocols between the gateway (120) and the adapter (130) provide procedures to enable typical analog phone system characteristics such as a dial tone and a line-in-use indicator. During an incoming or outgoing call, users of multiple phones on the packet telephony distribution system can make and receive calls or join a call in progress using methodologies commonly used for typical analog phone systems.
Abstract:
In a circuit designed to output a varying output voltage, the substrate of the semi-conductor component is connected to a regulator, in particular a switch, connected to a lower potential than the potential of the substrate of the circuit. The circuit can for example be used in a Subscriber Line Interface Circuit (SLIC).
Abstract:
A system is disclosed for providing video programming information from a plurality of sources over a unitary set of channels comprising a notch filter, a video program information receiver, a modulator, and a composite video generator. The notch filter is configured to receive the receive video programming information from a first source over the unitary set of channels and provide notched video programming information comprising the received set of channels, except a selected channel. The video program information receiver is configured to receive other video programming information from a second source. The modulator is configured to modulate the other video programming information onto a channel corresponding to the selected channel, thereby to provide modulated other programming information. The composite video generator is configuered to combine the notched video programming information from the notch filter and the modulated other programming information generated by the modulator thereby to provide composite video programming information over the unitary set of channels for provision to a television receiver.
Abstract:
A method for configuring a service type for an access device in a communication system is provided. The method includes receiving a request for service with a selected service type. The method further includes downloading an application program for the selected service type to a digital signal processor memory at the access device. The method further defines the service for the access device and activates the application on the digital signal processor to provide service with the selected service type.
Abstract:
According to one embodiment, an electronic/software module or unit is disclosed. The unit provides analog telephony functionality. According to one example embodiment, the module or unit acts like a universal PBX (private branch exchange) analog line card. According to another embodiment, the module is field programmable. According to yet another embodiment, the module is operating system independent, and/or provides a serial programming interface. According to yet another example embodiment, the module or unit is provided in the form of a printed circuit module that may be mounted in an expansion slot of a computing system such as a personal computer or workstation.
Abstract:
Telecommunications systems are provided which include telecommunications equipment, multi-pair connectors and cables, and management devices for grooming the conductors of the connectors and cables for efficient use of the conductor pairs between equipment. A further management device provides cross-connect fields for the conductor pairs of the system. A chassis may house the grooming device, any cross-connect device, and possibly a POTS splitter device. The grooming and cross-connects may be manually controlled, or electronically controlled, including locally or remotely.
Abstract:
A system and method for retrofitting telecommunications infrastructures of existing buildings with new telecommunications services. The present invention allows new telecommunications services to be provided over existing telephone lines with reduced cost. The telephony line interface module (or line interface transducer) used in retrofitting rooms of a building may be implemented as a telephone jack, in a telephony device, or as a separate device or "brick" which connects to the existing telephone wiring. In order to retrofit a room of a building with additional telecommunication capabilities, the line interface module is located in the room and connected to the existing telephone wiring. In one embodiment, a modulation unit may be connected to the existing telephone wiring, e.g., to the "other end" of the existing telephone wiring proximate to the PBX. The modulation unit may also be connected to a network, such as the Internet. The modulation unit is configured to communicate with line interface modules in each of a plurality of rooms and is configured to communicate with the network, and may optionally also communicate with the PBX. The system and method may operate to retrofit one or more rooms with improved telecommunication capabilities, such as a second phone line, a modem line, and/or a network line, among other capabilities. The present invention also provides improved telephony line interface module and telephony device embodiments that effectively implement line card functionality in the telephony line interface module and/or telephony device, respectively.
