Abstract:
A communications system (C) includes an internet protocol network, a calling modem (M) and an answering modem configured to effectively handle network latency. The calling modem (M) includes a timer (400) storing a network latency value (408). The network latency value (408) is compared to a network latency threshold (404). If the network latency value (408) is less than the network latency threshold (404), then a high speed modem connection is continued. If the network latency value (408) is greater than the network latency threshold (404), then the high speed modem connection is terminated. In place of the high speed modem connection, a low speed modem connection, a low speed modem connection is established. The calling modem (M) is operable to transmit a modem connection selection signal for selecting a high speed modem connection or a low speed modem connection. The answering modem is operable to receive the modem connection selection signal.

Abstract:
A system, method and software program for transmitting a digital image from a first communication device to a second communication device at a digital image service provider over a communication network. An upload software computer program dynamically analyzes certain properties of the first communication device and of the communication network connection with respect to predetermined criteria, and based on the analysis determines a strategy based on predetermined criteria for transmission of the digital images. For example, the upload software determines the number of communication threads and divides the digital images into a plurality of individual data packets each having a unique ID. The receiving communication device verifies receipt and determines if all of the plurality of individual data packets have been received and requests failed packets be resent.
Abstract:
A method of establishing a fax connection on a link which is a portion of a composite connection. The method includes transmitting at least some signals of a negotiation procedure on the link and initiating a retrain on the connection, without identifying a problem on the connection of the link, the retrain being initiated after transmitting the at least some signals of the negotiation procedure but before transmitting data on the data channel of the link due to the negotiation procedure.
Abstract:
A method of transmitting data bits over a modem connection. The method includes receiving a first stream of data bits, by a first modem, performing a first set of one or more communication tasks on the first stream of bits, by the first modem, so as to generate a second stream of bits, modulating the second stream of bits, by the first modem, so as to form a modulated signal, transmitting the modulated signal from the first modem to a second modem, demodulating the modulated signal by the second modem, so as to form a third stream of bits, performing on the third stream of bits, a second set of zero or more communication tasks, including a different number of tasks than the first set of tasks, so as to form a fourth stream of bits, and transmitting the fourth stream of bits to a communication unit over a packet based network.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a method of transitioning from a facsimile session to a voice session during a call between a wireless user and a facsimile machine. The method comprises sending a procedure interrupt request, sending a procedure interrupt response, sending a procedure interrupt confirmation, negotiating to a voice service option, and then beginning the voice service option.
Abstract:
A method of transmitting signals between a source modem and a destination modem. The method includes transmitting the signals from the source modem, over a first switched network path, to a first interface, encapsulating the at least some of the signals received by the first interface into packets, transmitting the packets from the first interface over a packet-based network to a second interface, removing the encapsulation of the signals at the second interface; and transmitting the data signals from the second interface over a second switched network path to the destination modem.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus is disclosed for preventing an originating facsimile machine (24) from going on hook prior to call completion due to setup delays. The originating facsimile machine (24) includes a start connect timer (25) having a predetermined time duration. The method and apparatus include detecting a facsimile call origination from the originating facsimile machine (24), anticipating expiration of the start connect timer (25), and sending a benign signal to the originating facsimile machine (24) prior to expiration of the start connect timer (25), wherein the benign signal allows the originating facsimile machine (24) to receive a digital identification signal message from a terminating facsimile machine (22) prior to expiration of the start connect timer (25).
Abstract:
Systems and methods for routing paper based information through a network such as the Internet are disclosed. In one embodiment, the system includes a device having an LCD display, a keyboard, and a connector for connecting a fax machine, scanner and printer to the device. In addition, the device includes a telephone connector for connecting the device to a network via an Internet Service Provider. In an alternative embodiment, a system is provided for scanning images via a fax machine and routing the image through the Internet as an e-mail.
