    Abstract: Electrical stimulation systems and methods for preventing and treating pressure ulcers is provided. The system includes a washable sheet with one or more conductive signal pathways and integral or removable electrodes and a connectable controller that cooperates with the sheet and electrodes to provide periodic electrical stimulation to a patient's skin. Various sensors may provide feedback and optional closed-loop control. The electrical stimulation patterns may help maintain tissue health, prevent development or worsening of pressure ulcers, or manage pain.

    Abstract: A patient support apparatus for supporting a patient wirelessly communicates with one or more tags using one or more RF transceivers. A controller onboard the patient support apparatus determines a position of the tag. The controller also receives an identifier from the tag and uses it to determine if the tag is attached to a patient or a device. If attached to a patient, the controller may allow a caregiver to activate a patient movement monitoring function. The movement monitoring function may monitor whether the patient exits the patient support apparatus, whether the patient has been turned, whether the patient is at risk of developing bed sores, and/or other aspects. If the tag is attached to a device, the controller automatically determines whether to associate the device with the patient support apparatus. The controller may also determine the location of the patient support apparatus from the RF transceivers.

    Abstract: A device for lateral repositioning of a load is disclosed, comprising a support to support the load, the support comprising a plurality of support elements arranged across a surface of the support, the support elements are movable from a retracted position to a raised position, the surface of the support comprises retention regions arranged in between the plurality of support elements, a first friction coefficient of the support elements is lower than a second friction coefficient of the retention regions, the retention regions support the load in the retracted position, such that a lateral movement of the load is subject to a retention force (Fr) from the retention regions, wherein, in the raised position, at least part of the weight (m) of the load is transferred from the retention regions to the support elements so that the retention force (Fr) is reduced.

    Abstract: A hospital bed has an inclinable backrest, a pneumatic mattress, and an automatically acting mechanical air pressure control for the mattress. The pressure control includes a gravity responsive valve between the backrest and another zone of the mattress. A weighted mass in the pressure control urges the valve to move to a desired position and may counter a biasing member acting on the valve. The weighted mass may prevail against the biasing member when the backrest is upright but may yield to the biasing member when the backrest has been lowered. With the backrest upright, pneumatic cells of the backrest may be isolated from the other zone of the mattress. With an air source arranged to inflate the other zone, that portion of the mattress exposed to greater weight of a patient, as would occur with the backrest upright, enjoys increased air pressure.
