Abstract: A device (16) for automatically presenting electronic devices (2) to a tester for testing. A plurality of carriers (12), each for carrying a set of electronic devices (2) are cyclically conveyed in a close loop from a loading stage where electronic devices (2) are loaded onto the carriers, through a pre-test chamber, such as a "soak" chamber, from the pre-test chamber to a test stage where the devices (2) are preferably lifted from the carrier (12) to come into contact with a test head contactor for testing, from the test stage to a post-test chamber, such as "un-soak" chamber, through the post-test chamber to an unloading stage where the carriers (12) are unloaded of the tested electronic devices, and then from the unloading stage back to the loading stage to receive a new set of untested electronic devices. Optionally, each carrier (12) comprises a set of secondary carriers (12) which ride in a like number of seats (4) defined by a primary carrier and sets of electronic devices are loaded onto and unloaded from the secondary carriers. Among other uses, the secondary carriers serve as adapters between the various forms of electronic devices (2) and a standard form of primary carrier (12).

Abstract: An apparauts for testing packaged integrated circuit devices includes an input track (10) into which untested devices are loaded for transfer by a fiber faced belt (12) to a reservoir (22). A test socket assembly includes a housing (32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42) having a channel (52) therethrough, which channel (52) includes an entrance (32) adjacent the reservoir (22). A plurality of contact portions (82) extend into the channel intermediate the entrance (32) and the exit (40). A piston (72) acting under the influence of a linear motor (70) pushes untested semiconductor devices (104, 106, 108) through the entrance (32) so as to cause the leads thereof to sequentially engage the contact portions (82) at which time they are tested. As additional untested devices are placed into the channel (52), tested devices are forced out of the channel (52) and into a sorting mechanism (20).

Abstract: Business forms are separated into discrete groups by laterally shifting one end of a carriage. The carriage (11) has a first end (12) which is oscillated in a generally horizontal plane by an eccentric (24) and arm (20) driven by a stepper motor (26) in response to sensing of zip codes (51, 52) on the business forms (53) by an optical scanner (50). A second end (14) of the carriage (11) is mounted for only limited oscillatory movement. A number of endless conveyor tapes (33) extend around a first grooved roller (30) mounted at the first end (12) of the carriage (11), and around a driven second grooved roller (34) mounted on a frame (15) which is distinct from the carriage (11) next to the second end (14).

Abstract: A device for recuperating used batteries has a receiving compartment (1) comprising a left sub-compartment (1a) with a baseplate (7) with inset contacts for receiving cylindrical batteries and a right sub-compartment (1b) for receiving right parallelepipedal batteries. In order to check whether an inserted object is a battery, the receiving compartment (1) is closed by a slide (not shown) and locked by a bolt (10), and a mounting (15) is lowered until contact points on a pair of stamps (20a, 20b or 21a, 21b) or a stamp (22a, 22b or 22c) on the mounting touch one of the contacts inset into the base plate (7) of the receiving compartment (1). A test is then carried out to ascertain whether a voltage of at least 20 mV exists between the contact points. If not, the object is subjected to a surge lasting approximately 1 second and a maximum voltage, usually 14 V, and the voltage test is repeated. The base plate (7) is then retracted and, if the results of two voltage tests are negative, the object falls into a return chute, otherwise it falls into a collecting container. The slide is then unlocked.

Abstract: A circuit board handling and testing apparatus (10) comprising a housing (20) having a top surface (22). Attached to the housing (20) is a magazine assembly (38) which accommodates a plurality of circuit boards (12) from which the circuit boards are dispensed onto a testing assembly (102) attached to the housing (20). The testing assembly (102) includes a modular testing component (100) receiving the circuit board and performing a testing protocol thereon. A reciprocal transport assembly (88) attached to the housing (20) pushes the circuit board dispensed onto the testing assembly (102) laterally into the modular testing component (100). A sorting assembly (154) attached to the housing (20) selectively directs the tested circuit board (12) into a particular containment vessel based upon the outcome of the testing protocol. The testing assembly (102) ejects the circuit board into the sorting assembly (154) on completion of the testing protocol. The modular testing component is removable from the testing assembly and replaceable with an alternative modular testing component.

Abstract: One or more concentric rings (7) of component seats (10) are rotatable about the ring center. The seats are uniformly angularly spaced and the rings are incrementally rotated. The rings (7) are inclined at an angle and a stream of components is poured onto the rings as they are rotating. Stationary fences (108a-108d) adjacent the seats confine unseated components to tumble randomly over empty seats passing through arcs of the ring's rotation path. The random tumbling results in seated components. In the paths of the rotating rings are electrical contactors (24) for coupling the components to a tester. Preferably there are five contactor stations to permit five different kinds of tests to be performed simultaneously. Tested components pass beneath an ejection manifold (22) which define a plurality of ejection holes (78) which register with a set of seats each time the ring is rotated. Ejection tubes (84) are coupled to the ejection holes (78) and the components are ejected from their seats by blasts of air from selectively actuated pneumatic valves (86). Due to the blast of air, the ejected components travel down the tubes (84) and are directed into sorting bins (96) according to a tube routing plate (98). The stream of components can be selectively directed to each fence in response to a signal from a detector (130) indicating that the fence is deprived of components. Sensors (158, 160) detect seated components that were not ejected by the ejection manifold (22).

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for sorting batteries (10), with batteries being separated on the basis of a measured electrical property which is characteristic of their composition. The electric property of the battery is according to the invention determined by applying to the battery (10) a varying electrical voltage and measuring the resulting current through the battery. The varying electrical voltage advantageously consists of a first pulse and a second pulse which have opposite polarities, and which may both be generated by the discharge of a capacitor (2). In addition, a second property may be determined, e.g., the shape or colour of the battery. With such method, a very effective separation between, e.g., nickel-cadmium, alkaline, lithium, and other batteries may be obtained. The invention further relates to a device (1) for determining electrical properties of batteries.
