A molding compound is made by heat-softening, fusing and compressing strips of unidirectionally aligned filaments embedded in a thermosetting resin. The thermosetting resin is non-tacky at room temperature, which allows for easy handling, elimination of cold storage and the use of robotic manufacturing methods. Composites made by molding the molding compound have excellent, highly isotropic tensile properties.

A method for producing a flexurally rigid molded part, comprises stacking a needled nonwoven mat (7) of reinforcing fibers, at least one thermoplastic resin sheet and at least one surface sheet ( 9 ) formed of a non-woven cloth comprising cloth fibers. The multilayered sheet obtained in this manner is subjected to a heating and pressure treatment followed by a cooling and pressure treatment, thereby forming a semi - finished product consisting of a consolidated laminated sheet with a porosity not exceeding 5% by volume. Upon reheating, the main body increases in thickness, thereby forming a porous laminated sheet that is formed to a compact in a hot molding process.

A method of manufacturing an SMC material is described which comprises the steps of: (a) applying a resin material (18) to a first carrier film (16); (b) sprinkling recycled material fibres onto the resin material (18) and first carrier film (16); (c) sprinkling virgin material fibres (22) onto the resin material (18) and first carrier. film (16); and (d) sandwiching together the first carrier film (16) and a second carrier film (26) with the virgin and recycled material fibres located therebetween. Also described is an apparatus for distributing the recycled material fibres and an SMC material production line incorporating such an apparatus.

A method for producing a fibre reinforced three-dimensional product comprises depositing of long fibres (8) in a mould (1) consisting of a frame (2) in which a carrier net for the fibres (8) is suspended. The individual layers of a formed plane laminate are positioned in such a manner that only a first end (9) is secured at a frame side. Said first ends (9) are secured at different frame sides (4-7). In this manner it is possible, in a pressing procedure giving the product its three-dimensional shape, to obtain a virtually even distribution of the fibres, even in areas which are subjected to the longest move away from the plane original laminate. In this manner sound well-defined mechanical properties are obtained in the three-dimensional product formed.
