Abstract:
A printing plate is described in which a plurality of relief areas are provided which stand proud of a floor of the plate, each of said relief areas having an uppermost surface to which, in use, is applied a liquid which is borne by said uppermost surface and subsequently contactingly transferred to a substrate material. Substantially the entire uppermost surface of one or more of said relief areas is provided with a predetermined pattern of depressions which define a corresponding pattern of islands within said uppermost surface. The invention is characterised in that the depressions within the uppermost surface comprise at least primary depressions of a first size and substantially geometric first cross-sectional shape, and secondary depressions, being of smaller cross-sectional area than said primary depressions and having a second cross-sectional shape which is distinctly more elongate than said first cross-sectional shape. The invention is further characterised in that the primary depressions are arranged substantially diagonally with respect to one another and in substantially continuous rows having a lateral separation which is at least three times a lateral dimension of the first cross-sectional shape, said secondary depressions also being arranged substantially diagonally with respect to one another and in rows, but the rows of the secondary depressions are orientated at a different diagonal angle to those of the primary depressions and are discrete in that their terminal depressions lie within consecutive rows of the primary depressions so as to define a corresponding pattern of islands of different sizes and diagonal orientations.
Abstract:
The various inventions and/or their various aspects disclosed herein relate to novel photosensitive flexographic plates comprising a plurality of perforations dispersed over and interconnecting the base layer surfaces of the photosensitive flexographic plates. The novel perforations in the base layers give unexpected advantages as compared to photosensitive flexographic plates without such perforations, such as the ability to very significantly speed up the normally slow drying and removal of solvents absorbed into imaged flexographic plates that have been prepared by photo-imaging the novel photosensitive flexographic plates of the invention, via known and widely used processes that employ solvent treatments of the imaged plates.
Abstract:
The invention pertains to a printing form and a process for preparing it from a curable composition that includes an epoxy resin and an amine curing agent selected from primary amines and secondary amines. The process includes applying the curable composition to a supporting substrate to form a layer, curing the layer, and engraving to form at least one cell in the cured layer. Preheating the substrate to a surface temperature greater than 40C and less than about 80C results in improved surface characteristics of the printing for, such as reduction of amine blush, elimination of bubbles, and lessened surface roughness, while not accelerating the curing rate or evaporation of volatile components to an undesirable degree. The process prepares printing forms, particularly gravure printing forms, having a cured resin composition layer that is engravable, resistant to solvent inks and to mechanical wear, and capable of printing gravure-quality images.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a flexographic printing member used to transfer ink from an image area to a receiver element. This flexographic printing member has a relief image including an image area that is composed of an elastomeric composition that has an elastomeric topmost surface and a relief image floor. The relief image has a plurality of dots within a sub-area of the elastomeric topmost surface wherein each dot has a minimum receiver element contact area. A fraction less than 1 of the plurality of dots, known as (b) dots, have a topmost surface that is undercut below the elastomeric topmost surface. The (b) dots are undercut below the elastomeric topmost surface in a predetermined number and arrangement so that the (b) dots are still able to transfer ink to the receiver element. Each of the remainder of the plurality of dots in the sub-area, known as (a) dots, has a topmost surface that is essentially coincident with the elastomeric topmost surface.
Abstract:
A sleeve segment (1) for flexography having the shape of a sleeve with a first circular side (4) containing a female registration element (6) and a second circular side (5) containing a male registration element (7). A method for manufacturing a flexographic sleeve segment, segmented sleeves and methods of flexographic printing are also disclosed.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a packing (03) to be applied on the peripheral surface (02) of a printing cylinder (01) of a rotary printing machine. Said packing has at least one inner layer (04) not firmly linked with the printing cylinder and one outer layer (06) not linked with the inner layer, said outer layer being retained on the printing cylinder by magnetic interaction.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a form for rotary printing, coating or embossing striplike materials. An elastomer coating (34) is applied to a base (33) with a cylindrical surface shell. When said shell hardens, its outer periphery is machined and engraved into a cylindrical form. The invention also relates to a method for producing such a form. The inventive form is characterized in that the elastomer coating (34) is made from a thermohardening silicon polymer with one or two components.
