Ion Harvesting Technology harvests high voltage electricity, including from atmospheric ions. A wire, or conductive tether, may be used to connect ion harvesting material (typically carbon, but including any materials such as metals, metamaterials, or others) located on or near an aerial platform to an anchor point. Because the harvested electricity is typically of high voltage, the electricity may arc between the conductive tether to nearby points of lesser or greater voltage. Such arcing represents a loss of power to the overall system, causing the overall system to be less efficient or possibly non-operational, and in some cases may cause catastrophic system failure. Electrical isolators may be used to prevent the losses from the arcing.

Described herein are features for high altitude lighter-than-air (LTA) balloon antenna systems and associated methods. One or more long wire communications antennas may be built into the balloon skin. The antenna may extend under, in, on or otherwise along one of the seams formed by connected edges of gores that define the balloon volume. The antenna may include an elongated electrical conductor with a length based on a desired communication frequency. The antenna may be secured with load tape along the seam. The antenna may be included in an LTA balloon system that includes multiple balloons connected in tandem, such as a zero-pressure balloon (ZPB) and one or more variable air ballast super-pressure balloons (SPB).

Das Trägersystem besteht aus einer mit Leichtgas gefüllten schwebenden Aluminiumkapsel (1) die mit einem Rahmengerüst (2) umhüllt ist, auf der mindestens eine nachhaltige Stromgewinnungsanlage (6) zur Stromerzeugung montiert ist. Die Energie wird in einem Akkumulator (11) gespeichert. Die am Rahmengerüst (2) befindlichen Beleuchtungsträger (3) mit Beleuchtungskörper (4) und Kommunikations- und Beobachtungsgeräte (13) werden mit Hilfe der Energie betrieben. Eine elektronisches Überwachungs-, Regel- und Steuersystem (5), ein Schalter (7) und eine Photozelle (14) steuern die autarke Funktion des Trägersystems. Methods and systems described herein relate to power generation control for an aerial vehicle. An example method may include operating an aerial vehicle in a crosswind-flight orientation substantially along a first flight path to generate power. The first flight path may- include a substantially circular path that allows the aerial vehicle to generate the power. While the aerial vehicle is in the crosswind-flight orientation the method may include determining to reduce the power being generated by the aerial vehicle, and responsive to the determination, determining a second flight path that will reduce the power generated by the aerial vehicle when operating on the second flight path. Once determined, the aerial vehicle may operate substantially along the second flight path.

A tethered aerostat with a ground based deployment, extended duration and recovery system to accommodate a weather vaning deployed aerostat while maintaining a supply of a lift gas by having a rotatable tether pipe and a hollow tether. Included is a rotatable tether pipe device assembly with rotor and stator components disposed in an air tight housing assembly to provide a ground based gas maintenance system. An aerostat deployment buoyancy control maintenance and combined recovery platform is provided. The tethered aerostat systems and method increase deployment duration and allow more systems to be controlled and maintained on the ground without interrupting aerostat operational capabilities.
