    Abstract: A rail fastening system (10) comprises a base plate (12) configured to sit on a support (14) and having a first recess 16 for receiving a length of a rail (18). The system (10) also includes a plurality of spring clips (20i) and (20t) arranged to clamp the base plate (12) between the rail (18) and the support (14); and in doing so fasten the rail (18) to the support (14). A resilient rail pad (21) may be placed in the recess (16) prior to the recess receiving the rail (18), so that the rail (18) sits on top of the rail pad (21). The plate (12) is not secured to the support before application of the clips. The clips are applied by pushing them over the base plate in direction perpendicular to the extent of the rail.

    Abstract: A tool for removing rail clips of the kind which are applied transversely to the rail, which includes a pair of levers connected at a pivot point and being adapted to move toward or away from each other. Each lever has at its lower end, a rail clip engagement face which engage opposed sides of a rail clip seating transversely on the rail base. Each clip engagement face inclues a clamp plate adapted to abut one side of the toes of the rail clip, an engagement pin adapted to engage one side of the rear portion of said rail clip, and a reaction pivot rear edge adapted to pivot about a point behind said rail clip. This arrangement allows the tool to be opened by moving the levers away from each other, placing the engagement faces on either side of the clip and then bringing the levers together so that the clamp plates compress the toes of the clip together so that the clip can be removed rearwardly from the rail clip support shoulder. When the toes are compressed the engagement pin abuts the rear curved portion of the rail clip and by pulling the levers away from the rail about the rear pivot base edge the rail clip is withdrawn from the base of the rail into the rail clip support shoulder.

    Abstract: A method of manufacturing a resilient rail clip comprises bending a rod, made of metal having a hardness value falling within a known hardness value range, into a predetermined shape and then subjecting the bent rod to a cold setting process in order to induce in the bent rod a predetermined amount of permanent set (S). One cold setting process comprises applying a first load (F 0 ) to part of the bent rod so as to cause a first amount of deflection of that part of the bent rod, which first load (F 0 ) is a predetermined load having a value equal to or greater than that required to reach the yield point of metal having the highest hardness value in the said hardness value range, measuring the first amount of deflection (d x ) of the said part of the bent rod achieved by applying the predetermined first load (F 0 ), determining, on the basis of the measured deflection amount (d x ), either (i) a second load (F 0 + ΔF X ), which, when applied to the said part of the bent rod, will cause the bent rod to acquire the predetermined amount of permanent set (S), or (ii) a second amount of deflection (d x + Δd x ) of the said part of the bent rod required in order to bring about in the bent rod the predetermined amount of permanent set (S), and applying the second load (F 0 + ΔF X ) to the said part of the bent rod or deflecting the said part of the bent rod by the determined second amount of deflection (d x + Δd x ). An alternative cold setting process comprises deflecting part of the bent rod by a predetermined first amount (d 0 ) by applying a first load (F x ) having a value equal to or greater than that required to reach the yield point of metal having the highest hardness value in the said hardness value range, measuring the amount of the first load (F x ) required to achieve the predetermined first amount of deflection (d 0 ), determining, on the basis of the measured load, either (i) a second deflection amount (d 0 + Δd x ) required in order to bring about in the bent rod the predetermined amount of permanent set (S), or (ii) a second load (F x + ΔF X ), which, when applied to the said part of the bent rod, will cause the bent rod to acquire the predetermined amount of permanent set (S), and deflecting the said part of the bent rod by the determined second deflection amount (d 0 + Δd x ) or applying the determined second load (F x + ΔF X ) to the said part of the bent rod.
