    Abstract: A method of effecting a video-based conversational interface at a computer device, the method implemented at the computer device and comprising: receiving, from a user of the computer device, a first natural language input; causing a display of the computer device to render an answer view, in which a first video segment is displayed in a main display region, and a self-video image of the user is displayed in a peripheral display region having a smaller area than the main display region, the self-video image captured by an image capture device of the computer device, and the first video segment selected based on the first natural language input; switching the display from the answer view to a question view, by enlarging the self-video image to replace the first video segment in the main display region; receiving, from the user, a second natural language input; and transitioning the display from the question view to the answer view, by reducing the self-video image to occupy the peripheral display region and replacing the self-video image in the main display region with a second video segment selected based on the second natural language input, the first and second video segments each selected from a set of pre-recorded video response segments spoken by the same person, whereby the enlarging of the self-video image in the question view masks the transition between the first video segment and the second video segment.

    Abstract: Introduced here are split-screen implementation techniques that can allow a user to view and interact with the user interfaces of two or more applications simultaneously. Each of the two or more applications can be displayed within its own portion of two or more portions. A split-screen mode can be activated by a user by opening a split-screen application and selecting the applications to be used. Once within the split-screen mode, the user can customize the layout by adjusting the size of each portion and/or moving the application between the portions. Further, when within the split-screen mode, the user can share content from one application to another by selecting and dragging the content. The split-screen mode can also be implemented on a foldable device. The folding of the device can be used as a trigger to initiate split screen mode and the folding line can be used a border between portions.

    Abstract: The provided techniques improve user engagement and more efficient use of computing resources by dynamically configuring video stream arrangements based on an aspect ratio of an available display area (401) and a target aspect ratio (410). Such techniques provide dynamically optimized user interface arrangements that accommodate any given shape of an available display area. The techniques can also help viewers maintain focus on the salient content of a multi-stream display when users resize a display window, move a window to a random shape, rotate a device, join a communication session, leave a communication session, present content streams, remove content streams, etc. A target aspect ratio can be utilized in a process to recursively divide a display area horizontally or vertically to accommodate any number of stream renderings. An adjustment of the target aspect can allow for an optimal display any number of video stream renderings for any shape of a display screen.
