Abstract: Methods and systems provide for applying a video effect to a video corresponding to a participant within a video communication session. The system displays a video for each of at least a subset of the participants and a user interface including a selectable video effects UI element. The system receives a selection by a participant of the video effects UI element. In response to receiving the selection, the system displays a variety of video effects options for modifying the appearance of the video and/or modifying a visual representation of the participant. The system then receives a selection by the participant of a video effects option, and further receives a subselection for customizing the amount of the video effect to be applied. The system then applies, in real time or substantially real time, the selected video effect in the selected amount to the video corresponding to the participant.

The video translation system (500) has a video interface to receive a first set of video data (516) associated with an audio-visual communication and an audio interface to receive translated audio data. The first set of video data (516) features a first user. The video translation system (500) also has an audio feature extractor (532) to determine audio-derived parameter values for a visual representation of the first user from the translated audio data, a video feature extractor (534) to determine video-derived parameter values for a visual representation of the first user from the first set of video data, and a video rendering interface to instruct a rendering of a second set of video data based on the audio-derived and video-derived parameter values.

Abstract: The disclosed techniques improve user engagement and more efficient use of computing resources by providing dynamically controlled aspect ratios for communication session renderings based on a number of people depicted in shared video streams. A system can identify select streams depicting at least a threshold number of individuals. A first aspect ratio can be selected from a number of preset aspect ratios for the display of select streams depicting at least the threshold number of individuals. A second aspect ratio can be selected for the display of other individual streams having video components depicting less than the threshold number of individuals. In some embodiments, the first aspect ratio is greater than the second aspect ratio. By switching between aspect ratios depending on a number of individuals depicted in each video stream, a system can improve user engagement by equalizing the display each person participating in a communication session.

Abstract: Various aspects of the subject technology relate to completing a payment over a video call. A method includes initiating, a video call between a user and a vendor, the user and the vendor having a scheduled appointment comprising a specified duration of time. The method also includes directing the user to the video call through video call software. The method also includes receiving, from the video call software, a notification that the video call ended, the notification comprising video call metadata. The method also includes calculating, through an online marketplace, a total cost of the scheduled appointment based at least on the video call metadata and marketplace data. The method also includes generating, through the online marketplace, an invoice based on the total cost. The method also includes receiving payment information from the user regarding the invoice. According to aspects, the method includes a flash-to-pay option for payment.
