In order to avoid inhomogeneities from scattering at a salt pool 22 within the discharge vessel, the lamp further comprises a diffusing portion 24 arranged such that at least a portion of light emitted below a horizontal is diffused, and that light emitted above the horizontal is not diffused. A headlamp comprises a reflector 32 with an upper reflector portion 36 reflecting light emitted above a horizontal and a lower reflector portion 38 reflecting light emitted below. The diffusing portion 24 is arranged such that at least a portion of light reflected at the lower reflector portion 38 is diffused, and that light reflected at the upper reflector portion 36 is not diffused.

A fill gas, at least one fill material comprising a first metal halide, and optionally at least one volatile material having a higher vapor pressure than the first halide are present in the discharge space. In one aspect, the electrode tip has a current rating of about P750V, where P is the lamp power. In some cases, the lamps can exhibit at least one of reduced run-up time, increased initial light output, and long life, while remaining useful for general lighting applications. The gas discharge lamp includes a light transmissive envelope with an inner surface, having a light scattering reflective layer disposed thereon. A phosphor layer is coated on an inner surface of the light scattering reflective layer. A discharge-sustaining gaseous mixture is retained inside the light-transmissive envelope. The discharge-sustaining gaseous mixture includes at least 88% argon, by volume, at a low pressure. An electrode is located within the light-transmissive envelope. The electrode is capable of providing an electric discharge to trigger a reaction within the light-transmissive envelope to cause the lamp to emit light. The remainder of the discharge-sustaining gaseous mixture is substantially neon, at a low pressure. The low pressure is about 3.6 Torr.

The invention relates to a metal halide lamp (1) comprising a ceramic discharge vessel, having an inner diameter, enclosing a discharge space which accommodate two electrodes arranged at an electrode distance, and which contains a noble gas and a salt filling, wherein (1) the salt filling comprises an alkali halide, a rare earth halide, and optionally thallium halide; (2) the discharge vessel has an aspect ratio, defined as the electrode distance divided by the inner diameter, of at maximum 4; and (3) the metal halide lamp has a wall load at full power, defined as the lamp power divided by the inner surface area of the discharge space, of at least 25 W/cm2. Especially, the discharge space contains 0.015-1.5 µg/mm3 alkali halide.
